Interesting bit of news here. The Zoo may relocate to an undisclosed 50-acre property.

Quote:
A selection committee, which includes zoo and city staffers, as well as Friends of the Zoo board members, is in the process of interviewing three consulting firms to devise the zoo's master plan. Once a firm is picked, the committee will ask them to come up with an analysis of the zoo's current location in Cleveland Park as opposed to a 50-acre tract of undeveloped land, which has not been disclosed to the public.

I saw this on the news at noon and was quite excited. This could be a pretty great thing for the Greenville Zoo.

Possibly in the future park along the Reedy River just west of the Kroc Center?

I hope they move the zoo to a bigger area. The Greenville zoo in it's current form is a disgrace. I feel so bad for those animals that I don't even go there.

I do not think there are many suitable sites along the Reedy River north of the Kroc Center large enough for a zoo and floodproof for potential businesses, residences, and venues to locate.

I applaud Greenville Zoo's efforts to get better. If the zoo wants to get bigger, then relocation should be considered. If it is, it could be that undisclosed 50-acre site, half the size of Riverbanks Zoo (100 acres excluding the gardens), or another site larger or up to the same size as its Columbia counterpart.

Relocating the zoo would obviously allow the zoo to be truly world class and potentially set the standard for zoos in the Southeast. In addition, it would open up a sizable amount of land for future development. The city's park system could be further expanded/enhanced, or a nice development could be planned for the old zoo site. I like the possibilities here!

50 acres is still very small for a zoo. The current zoo is a sad embarrassment, a 50 year old relic from when animals were treated like objects in a museum.

I say give all the animals away to more suitable surroundings, like the 1,400 acre habitat at the North Carolina zoo, the largest "walk-through" natural-habitat zoo in the world - an actual world class facility. Then expand Cleveland Park into the current zoo location.

Close the current tragedy that Greenville calls a zoo for good. Tax dollars should not be spent on this.

I think the Greenville Zoo has done an admirable job with what they have. I support them completely. But true, it would definitely benefit from a larger site for many reasons, esp. the welfare of the animals.

I would love to see the zoo on the hills of Roper Mountain. Probably not room, but it would be a cool location. I like the terrain of the current zoo....very different from the typical flat, amusement park type zoo.
