attached is the annual Long Range Facilities Plan and Capital Improvement report the GCS puts out each year as far as buildings and facilities are concerned. Instead of having you rifle through all 68 pages here's the data that struck me the most and has me asking why a 15th high school in Fountain Inn is even necessary. The projected enrollments for the 2016-2017 school year is the one to focus on since Ft. Inn HS is set to open in 2017. Plus that's as far as the report goes haha. Basically by that time the district will still have 1,733 seats open in the buildings combined. Now I assume no one wants to hear this especially those in Ft. Inn but why not just re-assign some neighborhoods to even things out? Second, even if you focus on the Golden Strip schools like JL Mann, Mauldin, Simpsonville and Woodmont with Woodmont's new addition suppose to be complete by 2014 you're talking only an overcapacity of 26 kids when you combine all 4 schools. Kind of silly to build an entire high school for only a 26 seat issue. Now i realize the district wants to keep every school below 2,000 students in the future or as close to that number as possible but even if you slash 200 kids away from hillcrest that's still not worth it financially IMO. you could just as easily send the extra to Woodmont and they'd still be under capacity. Now I also realize that area is growing, has been i'm assuming still will but if you're going to rezone kids away from Mauldin, Hillcrest and Woodmont while at the same time building a whole new addition on to one of those 3 why build the new addition in the first place?

Just random thoughts and a rant, enjoy :-)

More students are coming up through The School District of Greenville County. In correlation with population growth in southern Greenville County, schools are educating more students. Adding a fourth high school in southern Greenville County, with Hillcrest, Mauldin and Woodmont present, will help take on additional students while serving the immediate areas around Fountain Inn.

No, we do not neet to spread students to other schools for redistricting. The current school district has too many issues assigning students who live near a school a block away to another school seven miles away and a very high teacher/student ratio.

We need a new high school now, not in 2017.

Why can't they consolidate and use the buildings they have?

The need is already there. You can't just look at current enrollment in the high schools. IMO 2,000 in one school is too many teenagers in one place.

Yes, and all schools filling into Ft. Inn are over 2,000. What do you not get about my statement? You can't wait until the need is there; you have to plan ahead.

Having a HS in Ft Inn will bring more families into that area and help with city growth, which equals an increase in taxes for the city/county. That in turn will also bring in more business/factories. Which also helps increase the tax base.

Sort of along the line of the chicken and the egg syndrome.

Plus you do have to plan ahead for building, hiring, etc.. Also, have you looked into the number of children in the area that are in elementary school? It's possible that GCS has projected as far back as k-5 or 1st grade.

There is nothing wrong with planning just as long as it doesn't include big expenditures for building before it is really needed and $$ has been allocated for it. You don't go spending $$ you don't have based on pie in the sky projections of people moving here. What if they DON'T move here? You have to plan for that too.
