I would say Frederick MD is my other favorite, it is sort of a village version of downtown greenville and a great park adjacent to it Baker Park.

I think Aiken SC is the best small town downtown i've seen.

If one were to compare Greenville, SC to other comparably-sized metro areas, one must include Chattanooga - amazing downtown revitalization (and perhaps better than Greenville). Both Chattanooga's Children's Museum and Aquarium are incredible (and aesthetically appealing).

You've come to the right place...I just so happen to be a former downtown development director, so I'm a bit of a dork when it comes to downtowns. :-)

On cities of equal size to Greenville, I just did a drive through of Downtown Knoxville and thoroughly enjoyed what I saw. I hope to go back soon and investigate further, but I was impressed.

I echo Chattanooga. I spent a night there a couple of years ago and really enjoyed it. I've been meaning to go back ever since, but haven't.

Of course, there's Charleston. Enough said.

In the smaller cities category, I would be remiss if I didn't mention Asheville.

And though a small town, I really enjoy Downtown Hendersonville, NC. It doesn't have the pulsing undercurrent of Greenville, but I would live there. Same goes with Franklin, TN.

In the big cities category, I really enjoyed Downtown Denver and the various adjoining LoDo District where many of the local breweries are located.

Richmond, VA (around the Fan District) and Franklin Street in Chapel Hill are great places in the SE.

It's a town not a city, but downtown Portsmouth, New Hampshire is terrific.

Naperville, Illinois (though it's grown from 50k to 140k in the 25 years I've lived here, so it probably doesn't qualify as small any more).

Um just about every city I have been to in Europe and Japan.

San Antonio
Austin by miles
Chapel Hill
Toronto
Seattle

Holy crap where do I stop.

I'll just stop there.

LOTS of cities have better downtowns than Greenville. I will admit Greenville is better than the battered shell it used to be.
