Dish is saying that Media General (WSPA) wants 3-4x the normal rate. Ouch. It's funny how Media General was trying to get viewers to contact DISH or to change to Charter or DirecTV.

Viewers should actually contact WSPA and tell them to negotiate something more reasonable or watch ABC, NBC or Fox.

Just get an antenna for your local channels and the problem is solved, regardless of the Dish Network dispute. And you will still have Dish for your premium channels. They even offer an OTA USB tuner that integrates the local channels into the Dish receiver/DVR.

Local Channels | DISH Fights For You | DISH
This incident is the result of DISH Network's failure to acknowledge the value of major networks (ABC/CBS/NBC) and the large volume of viewers who watch their extensive lineup of programming, not to mention the significant number of viewers who watch locally produced programs (local news/weather/sports, etc.) and numerous nationally syndicated programs (Dr. Phil/Judge Judy/Ellen/Dr. Oz, etc.). DISH is unwilling to pay fair, market-based rates for a significant service, yet they have been willing to put money into large propaganda trucks driven around the markets of Media General's stations. You may remember Media General agreed to a three-month contract extension with DISH at the end of June, hoping an agreement would be reached before October. Notice similar disputes have not recently involved any other cable/satellite provider.

If you want to see the NFL on CBS this weekend (New England vs. Cincinnati and Denver vs. Dallas), just plug in an antenna or find another provider that appropriately values your business.

DISH did say they offered to pay the same rate as similar stations in the market. If every broadcaster tries to increase their rates at unreasonable levels then how will sat/cable be affordable?

WSPA offers their service for FREE. Dish just retransmits then pays for that right. So if everyone on Dish gets an antenna and keeps Dish for other programming, how does that benefit MG?

I am getting both WSPA-7 and WBTV-3 at 100% signal strength with an attic antenna. So no problems with CBS or any local channels as a result of these disputes.

Dish is now broadcasting WGN in WSPA's spot. For some that is an upgrade!

Anybody notice that WSPA let Dish broadcast their signal for two days this month, Oct 5-7? Dish requested the broadcast with the threat of the tropical storm that really never came our way.

I'm very happy for you and thx for the info about the tuner, but how do you get these things installed when you can't DIY? What kind of antenna? Where do you buy it? Where do you install it? Then do you have to keep turning off the satellite when you want to watch a local channel with the antenna and back on again when you want to watch a DISH channel? Sounds very complicated, and I don't want to need a technology degree to watch TV. What about the fact that I don't see DISH reducing anyone's monthly bill for the loss of this important channel that we're paying for. So on top of a big monthly bill, now we need to buy a fancy antenna and a tuner, and pay for the installation of all this? Not to mention that I've read about numerous people getting an antenna, and due to where they live, they still couldn't get local channels, so it was all a waste of a lot of money!

Depending where you live you may be able to use something like a "leaf" indoor antenna such as:

Amazon.com: Winegard Company FL-5000 FlatWave HDTV Indoor Digital Flat Antenna - Made in USA: Electronics

Winegard and Mohu both offer them and folks that have them have given good results in this area. They also offered amplified versions. Some of the newer Dish receivers offer an "antenna in" jack on the receiver. Then you can go into the menu and have the receiver search for stations, which will then be added to your guide. No switching is needed.

If you need an outdoor antenna, WSPA is offering a deal on one through their website, but it must be installed on the roof or maybe inside your attic and the cable ran down to the receiver.

www.antennaweb.org can help you with your antenna buying decision.

WSPA was negotiating a hire rate with Dish because Media General who owns WSPA and other stations is being purchased by a larger media company later this year. That company already has a contract with Dish, so after the merger takes place, I would think that CBS will be back on Dish in our area.

Don't expect Dish to drop your rate or allow you to cancel a contract. They have the right to drop or change channels at anytime. (Pretty much standard within the industry. Also cable networks, like Charter, can also have these types of issues...several large cable companies in the NE had to drop CBS earlier this year during negotiations).
