Right now, there is high potential for a job transfer to Spartanburg, but we would like to live in the greater Greenville area rather than Spartanburg. Right now, we are in Fort Mill, SC.
My spouse and I would be looking for a convenient, yet safe area that isn't in the sticks. House price will probably range from $300-$450K. This will be our final home (hopefully, anyway), so since we are middle-aged, we aren't looking for a community with families just starting out, but certainly not a "retirement" community either --- don't think we could take that. I like to run, so I'd like an area that is safe to run on streets/roads.
We would like to have conveniences around such as Target, healthcare, variety of decent restaurants and supermarkets (the norm).
Kids are grown except for one --- our last one just started H.S. What is the best area high school? Opinions? I'd like to hear from parents with kids in H.S.
Right now, Fort Mill is one of the very top in the state of SC, so I'd like to find one close in ranking.
If you are looking in Greenville County, you may want to consider the city of Greer and surrounding communities. In the School District of Greenville County, you have Blue Ridge (AAA), Eastside (AAA) in Taylors, Greer (AAA) and Riverside (AAAA).
The Riverside community is about to receive needed retail in a supermarket across the street from Riverside High School. You are also within a short drive to several restaurants in Greer.
If you will be working in Spartanburg and desire better access to Greenville (with its downtown, shopping, Falls Park), live in Greer - the Riverside schools have been generally regarded as excellent - look at the SC state reports card website - check out greatschools as well. Greenville County Schools is gigantic (the largest in the state) - it has 72,000 students and 90+ schools (i.e. you want to look at other schools beyond Riverside).
Greer has all the retail you need (Target, Publix, Belk, Kohl's, etc) - Bass Pro Shops plans a gigantic new development there for 2015/16. Greer Memorial Hospital is fantastic (affiliated with Greenville Health System) - Pelham Medical Center (affiliated with Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System) is good as well.
You might also want to consider the Duncan area that feeds Byrnes High School. That would be convenient to Greenville and Spartanburg. Byrnes is also a great school.
FYI. Wade Hampton and Mauldin have the highest graduation rates in the county, at 92.2%.
