We are in our early 60s and thinking of retiring to the Greenville, SC area. However, we are not sure if we want to live in Greenville proper. We want a safe area, with restaurants, shopping, medical care etc. We will not be working. We are use to small New England towns that have a quaint downtown. We need housing to be in the $150,000-ish price range. We were thinking of Powdersville or Simpsonville. How are these areas? Or should we consider Greenville itself? Any and all ideas, comments, suggestions welcome. thanks.

Fort Mill or Indian Land in York and Lancaster counties.
Simpsonville from the list you give. Especially if a hospital is neccessary.
Mauldin, near the high school is a perfect area for diversity meets quaint lifestyle imo. The 'city' of Woodruff road is one exit away (and you are close to the exit). Plenty of dining. You can walk everywhere and get fresh air (park, restaurants, etc).
Simpsonville , yes you can do the same but it's not as pedestrian friendly. Long walks to make it to a main road with dining/parks/etc. The city is built differently.
These are all good suggestions. You won't have a problem with your budget either. Downtown Greenville won't work with your budget though. My suggestion is to come visit. I know I always make recommendations also but it all depends on what you are looking for. Downtown Greer has a walkable area with restaurants and stores as well. Travelers Rest is another suggestion. All of these areas have what you have mentioned. I'm sure you will find something that fits your needs.
Traveler's Rest has a small downtown area and is convenient to the Swamp Rabbit Trail and the North Greenville Campus of Greenville Hospital. Travelers Rest is also a bit closer to the beauty of the mountains.

Travelers Rest would be my recommendation, as well. It's very walkable with the SRT. Simpsonville will have more to offer in the way of dining and easier access to shopping venues, though there are plenty of nearby options close enough to TR in and around Cherrydale, plus I feel like it's a lot more convenient to downtown Greenville.
Thanks to all that have replied. We will be taking a road trip this spring but I also value other people's opinions who live in the area.
