I received this info in an email and thought I'd pass it along:
Interested in volunteering with Seeing Spartanburg in a New Light? Sign up now!
Seeing Spartanburg in a New Light is bringing neighborhoods across the city together through the power of public art. Do you want to participate in this first-of-its-kind project?
In 2015, the City of Spartanburg was selected as one of four communities nationwide to take part in Bloomberg Philanthropies Public Art Challenge, a new program to support temporary public art projects that celebrate creativity, enhance urban identity, encourage public-private partnerships, and drive economic development. Seeing Spartanburg in a New Light will bring art installations to nine sites benefiting 10 neighborhoods. The lights will be switched on Oct. 4, 2016, in conjunction with National Night Out. To learn more, visit www.SeeingSpartanburg.com.
We need volunteers to help fill a variety of roles, from giving tours to assembling "Mobile Suspension," an enormous installation that will suspend five curtains of transparent color swatches above Denny's Plaza in downtown Spartanburg.
Help assemble a one-of-a-kind art installation
From Sept. 6 through Sept. 29, residents and groups ages 13 and up can sign up to volunteer for 90-minute or 2-hour shifts to help assemble "Mobile Suspension." Assembly will take place at 201 E. Broad St. in downtown Spartanburg. Volunteers will assist in one of three positions.
-Peeling and Stacking: Remove protective film from acrylic tiles and stack them in the correct order. Volunteers need to be able to read the layout/guide for the order of tiles or follow verbal instructions. This is a great position for younger volunteers.
-Attaching Wire to Tiles: Attach the wire onto the acrylic tiles. Volunteers need to be able to pry and bend wire into tiles, which requires hand strength. Thin or "tech" gloves recommended. Some gloves may be available.
-Strand Assembly: Put strands of acrylic tiles together vertically and horizontally. Volunteers need to be able to lift and hang tiles into strands and follow the pattern guide.
We also are training docent volunteers who will serve as tour guides for school and adult groups, special events and programs. This dedicated group of volunteers is vital to the success of the impact of this public art project. If you believe in the power of public art as an agent of change, then join us in providing rich and engaging experiences for those who want to learn more.
