I wonder whats being done to fix our misleading population count in the city? I have had to explain to people several times why it feels so much larger than 57,000. Because its really 302,194(urban area)! Metro is really 1.2+ million considering the original GSA metro. I wonder how much this hurts Greenville when it comes to police force, tax money for the city and whatnot?

Yea! Well its not a small town, but a mid sized city realistically. Thats why they do what they can to pull in revenue I guess though.

There's not much the city can do regarding this issue due to the stupid strict annexation laws this state has. Luckily, the city is doing fairly well financially compared to other cities in the nation during these tough economic times.

It would be interesting to see what happened here if people saw those much larger numbers...I imagine most people don't realize that there are so many people.

It's kind of like Atlanta. The city has less than 500,000 people but the metro area is one of the largest in the country.

Atlanta is not hurting either. We will stand out whether these numbers are right or not. I went to Asheville yesterday, its amazing how small it feels compared to Greenville when the city populations show differently. Asheville didn't feel much larger than Spartanburg to me.

In South Carolina it is difficult for municipalities to annex neighboring towns/communities. This is why Greenville and Spartanburg have relatively low population, but huge sprawling suburbs. In other states, like Alabama, cities will add rural areas to their 'city', often times making the city appear to have a much larger population, when it fact it doesn't.

The only disadvantage with Greenville is that it kind of makes city services inefficient. To us South Carolinians, we enjoy 'local' politics instead of the city making all the decisions.

But who's complaining? Whatever system we have here seems to work, so I don't see fixing something that ain't broke .

This is true but I often read in the paper, etc. that people like the "small-town feel" but I'm guessing they're mainly talking about the people.

When they say small town feel I think they're speaking of the main street layout and friendly people. Like I said, its not a small town. I'm just telling you what I see. I'm from a small town. If you tell me somethings red and I see its blue, I'm gonna say its blue.
