My husband is being promoted from a district sales manager (on the west coast) to a regional sales manager in the south. For some unknown reason, and much to my dismay, his region does NOT include South Carolina. We have been to Greenville and absolutely love the area. It would be the perfect place to live. Unfortunately, he must live in a state that's in his region. The only states we would consider in his region are Georgia, Tennesse or Kentucky. Can anyone recommend a city or area that is similar in charm and beauty to Greenville? We love the cultural events and festivals, the restaurants, boutiques, galleries and scenic beauty of the surrounding area. Any suggestions?
Try Chattanooga TN. In my opninon it has a lot in common with greenville, and has received much attention over the years for its revitalization. Indeed, Greenville once looked to Chattanooga during the start of our revitalization efforts. If Alabama is on the list, also consider Huntsville. It too is a growing foothills city with similar climate and amenities. I do not know much about Kentucky cities, and I cannot think of a Georgis city that is really comperable to Greenville.
Lived in Chattanooga for 2 years and recently moved to Greenville (Simpsonville). Both cities are comparable and offer similar amenities.
Both have "revitalized" downtowns - Chattanooga's downtown sits on the Tennessee river with multiple pedestrian bridges - Greenville has the awesome "Falls Park". Greenville (metro) has a larger population than Chattanooga. Greenville's retail/shopping is better: multiple Publix, Whole Foods, Costco, etc, etc. Chattanoga has an incredible Children's museum downtown - but Greenville is planning the biggest children's museum (in the southeast) for 2009. Public schools are better in the Greenville area - Chattanooga has some nationally renowned private schools (McCallie, GPS, Baylor). Chattanooga has the edge on scenery - wonderful mountain backdrops (Lookout and Signal) - Greenville is about 45 minutes to Asheville, NC.

In the three states you name, I agree with the others on here that Chattanooga is most similar. Very similar revitalized downtowns with shops and restaurants, lofts, etc. Downtown ballparks. Chattanooga has an old automobile bridge over the TN River that was refurbished and turned into a pedestrian bridge. It connects with Chattanooga's greenway. Greenville has the architecturally stunning Liberty Bridge that has become the center of the city. Liberty Bridge connects to Greenville's greenway. Both have historic downtown hotels that have been refurbished. Both downtowns are very pedestrian friendly.
Many, many similarities. Chattanooga has a bit better scenery and more tourism. Greenville has a bit more upscale shopping and is more of a business destination.
For what it's worth, Greenville leaders consider Birmingham to be a "peer city" in terms of economic development and business climate. I don't know that they are similar in the ways you mentioned, but economically they are on par.
Thank you so much for the great response. I have checked out some photos and postings about Chattanooga, and yes, it does remind me of Greenville. It looks like a wonderful city. We should be flying out in September and October to look at neighborhoods. What a great time of year for our first visit to the area!
