We have a hot water issue at present time. A local Plumbing Company has given us the initial bid, which seems very high. We need a new 40 gallon gas water heater (leaking) and an expansion tank. Would like to know, who folks on this forum would recommend as a reputable and fair priced plumbing company. Thanks.

Also might be cheaper to look into buying the water heater/expansion tank yourself and then paying someone to install it.

Aside from that, have you looked into signing up for a home warranty and then using that? Some of them (like American Home Shield) don't do inspections first or anything and don't really care if you already have problems. Our 18 year old water heater went out last year and the home warranty covered most of it - we actually had to pay $200 total to get everything up to code (which included the expansion tank and a new tray, neither of which AHS covers because they aren't part of the actual water heater).

Anyway, $200 was much better than the $700 or so it would have cost!

I will be in this boat sometime soon. How does a tankless compare in price to a traditional electric unit? I probably won't be buying while that tax credit is available.
