I bought my first gun at a small chain called Giantway supermarket in Michigan that used to sell guns in a small sports center in the back. It was a H&R Plainsman 22lr bolt action that I have to this day and would not part with it. It cost me 28 dollars and I had it on layaway. It was 1973 and 28 bucks then was like 125 now. Its in as good of condition as when I bought it. Many people I used to hunt with would always say if their lips get chapped they can always kiss my guns. LOL I own them because I like them and I use them. They make me feel good. Just as with most things people collect. People like Motorcycles, cars, or even cracker jack prizes from the early years.
I have guns for a few different reasons. I have guns for hunting, guns for defense of myself and my family and others when out and about. Then, I have guns that only get used for training and are solely for the purpose of defending our nation from those who might trample our inalienable rights. I have a couple of good dogs and other measures in place to ensure that my tools do not fall into the wrong hands, since part of responsible ownership of dangerous tools is restricting access to them by irresponsible parties. There are myriad reasons to own guns, and different guns for different tasks.

I agree. Did you mean 4-5 months for you yourself from the 90 lbs and the rest of the elk you gave to the kids? Or was the 90lbs good for your whole family? If you took only the hind quarter I assume you gave the rest away?

I split the elk with my kids. I took a hind quarter and the back strap. The kids got the rest. The hind quarter and backstrap will keep me in meat for about 4-5 months. But I also have antelope, deer, wild turkey in the freezer and of course, Wild Turkey in the cupboard.

I'm going to assume you have more than one freezer because that is a lot of meat! Do you even buy meat at the store? Peta and vegetarians must despise you.

No, I don't buy much meat. Maybe 20 lbs a year. I get enough game so I don't have to buy any meat.
I have 2 freezers. 7 cubic ft in my cabin and a 30 cubic ft in the shop. But the cabin I live in is only 352 sq ft so space is a premium.
I own a gun because it is my right, and it's a right protected by the second amendment. I mostly collect guns for their historical meaning, target shooting , and personal defense.
In today's political climate I'm not sure I'd be posting online that I owned guns at all, unless I was ready to use them against the state as it imposed martial law. Not a very wise thing to invite the attention of the state about.

I am a realist, and I don't think , the Men In Black will come to get me and my guns. I am more concerned with incidents that cause an over reactive emotional response, and cause silly laws that will do nothing but infringe my rights.
