If you shoot your 12ga well I'd stick with it and use low brass #6 shot. Would try to keep shots out past 20yds though!

I don't completely agree with this. I've always been a meat hunter and I can understand all of the disdain for trophy hunting behind high fences, etc. etc., but it sounds like you would hold it against someone who, while hunting his normal "meat grounds", killed a beautiful animal with trophy potential and, after breaking the carcass down into primal cuts, quarters, ribs and broth bones, decided to save the cape and antlers or maybe just the head for a european mount. I don't think it makes sense to waste any portion of an animal. If an animal has aesthetic beauty worthy of commemoration, I see it as a waste to leave it and let it rot.

Also, the point is that my wife likes to feel as though she married Gaston.

To the OP: I don't see a rational reason for you to purchase another shotgun specifically for squirrel hunting. The 12 gauge will do the job and, in some ways, will be ideal. Of course, if you just WANT another shotgun then that's a cat of a different color and you should definitely buy the one that you covet.
