Thanks folks, I have been looking at it for a while now and every time I go in I talk myself out of buying it...but my wife just said to do it, go buy it....
Was looking to replace my old CCW semi and mentioned it to my brother who has been a LEO for over 30 years. Mentioned the Springfield XD and he was against it for one reason, the grip safety. Both of us went down to our local "drool" store and was talking to one of his retired LEO's friends who works there. He was also not a fan of the XD and mentioned that other LEO's had the same opinion. Mentioned to them I had no problem with the grip safety on the 1911's I qualified with in the service. Both of them agreed that the 1911's grip safety was a different animal than the XD. After picking up the XD I understood their concern. It just didn't feel right, remember now I was very familiar with the 1911's. I can not say exactly what the problem was other than it just didn't feel right. In addition if you want a "safety" then I would go with the standard safety like on the S&W M&P. Went with the S&W M&P. All of the above was based on their opinions and how the weapon felt to me. I say if you like how the XD feels then go with it. Just a personal opinion here.

I have a Springfield XD, the grip safety is exactly why I liked the gun. I guess if you are used to another type of grip safety then there is some adaptation.
But be careful about getting firearm advice from a LEO, many of them are not "gun guys" at all, and their service weapons are typically glocks without any safety at all. To me, glocks "don't feel right" although they are excellent weapons.

Well I think it depends on the LEO's you ask. One is retired State Police officer and shot competition, other retired officer was the firearm instructor for the State Police, another is the firearms specialist for the Sheriffs Dept, another, shot competition and doesn't like the XD or the Glocks.. So, just because the weapon wasn't for me doesn't mean it isn't a good weapon. Also I wasn't just basing my decision on their opinions but on what the weapon felt like to me in comparison to others and the one I purchased (S&W M&P Shield 9mm). FYI, I decided I wanted to have a concealable weapon and the S&W CS45 nor the S&W 1911 was going to do the job. You will also notice I'm a little prejudice. However years ago (55+) I did own a Ruger Blackhawk 357 and a Ruger Bearcat 22, (still wish I had them)
I'm in california and we are not allowed to buy that gun. But I have a 9mm XDSC (& XD40 4") and absolutely love it.
Interesting discussion. The retired LEO at my gun club likes it.
I've tried numerous popular carry HGs (LC9, MP shield, G26, some revolver that I absolutely hated) and so far this is my favorite. I have not figured out how to carry it yet though, and I have plenty of time since it apparently takes about 12 months for a CCW approval in Sacramento County. They aren't even accepting applications right now.
