Since you can get up close to your wife and daughter pretty much any handgun should do the job fine.

When are men going to stop this, " I want to get a gun for my wife and daughter" stuff. Let them get their own guns. How would you like it if your wife decided to get a gun for you on her own?
First do they want a gun
second they should go to where they can test several and pick their own.

As to the OP's original question: I would suggest, IF it is for home use only that they get a Rugar SP 101 in whichever caliber she prefers.

Was watching a episode of NRA and the subject was on the best firearm for a woman, I think 15 different firearms from revolver to semi-auto were tested by women. They all hated the revolver. In addition one must remember the smaller the weapon the lighter the weapon the more the recoil. But it is their choice, as the previous poster said. Whatever fits their hand and they are comfortable with should be left up to them. The only problem with a semi-auto is that the person must be capable of racking the slide. The consensus of the majority of women was for a .380, but do not remember the manufacture.
My wife has a hard problem racking the slide of my 1911 45acp but she loves the weapon, however that would not be a problem with a home defense weapon since it is always loaded with one in the chamber However she also took my Glock 43 for her carry weapon. Oh well have to keep the little lady happy and a good excuse to purchase another gun

I would like to get my wife (36) and daughter (16) a gun for home protection as well. They struggle to shoot my gun at the range because too much recoil.

My daughter is skinny and doesn't weigh much.

We plan to go to academy to try to see which guns fits their hands comfortably.

Which guns do you recommend for them for less recoil and no so expensive? The guns is only for home protection and plan to shoot at the range for 30 minutes every other month just for practice.

Thank you,
Take a look at the Ruger LCR .38-caliber on the heavier side, to a .22LR Ruger LCR.
