My initial thought is that if schools are a priority, you might be better off looking elsewhere. I am not sure what schools your kids would attend but my perceptions overall are that Norfolk schools are a crapshoot. As a caveat, I haven't been in the area long. However, when we were looking to move, we chose VA Beach because of the schools. Are they perfect in VA Beach? Of course not. But, the school system is regarded much more highly than Norfolk schools.

That's not to say you can't have a good experience in Norfolk public schools or a bad experience elsewhere. But, if schools are a priority, I wouldn't take my chances. That is just one man's opinion and hopefully others will chime in with some assistance.

Run...dont walk... run away as fast as you can from this neighborhood......Colonial Place is way to close to Park Place and has allot of carry over problems from there...plus the neighborhood has a large number of rentals which fill up with kids going to ODU...so it is turning into a party neighborhood....

But as long as you can deal with the crappy Norfolk schools, the high crime rate and the loud weekend parties, move right in, it will save you 15 minutes of travel time going to work...LOL.......Seriously do yourself and your family a big favor and stay either in Va Bch or Ches...

I'm not military, but doesn't the base housing office have some kind of list of rental homes (not base housing) where the owners are willing to rent to military service members and will accept allotments? You might check into that too.

Park Place *is* rough, but Colonial Place does have a very good civic league and crime prevention group.

I live near the airport, and we're on a dead end street with a piece of Lake Whitehurst in the back yard, and it is heavenly.
