My uncle was in the Navy and was stationed in Norfolk in the 70's and 80's and when visiting him in that dump of a town, I always got a kick out of my dad and my uncle joking about "Sh1t City", that's what sailors called Norfolk at the time.

Do they still call it that? I have not been back in more than 15 years, and at that time, it had not seemed to have changed much. Is it any better? I cant imagine it being any worse.

Kind of a retarded question. I have never heard of it called that before so I suppose not.

Fail troll is fail.

That term for Norfolk is a rather old label. I don't think many of the current
citizens know much about the SH$t stuff. There was a movie with Jack Nicholson back in the 1970's called The Last Detail about sailors transporting
a prisoner from SH$t City to a Navy prison in Mass. There was a lot of references to that effect about Norfolk in that movie. I also remember reading an article years ago about how the local citizens of Norfolk put up signs in their yards telling sailors they weren't welcomed.

Norfolk has grown, and many areas have been redeveloped into very nice communities.
That being said, you still dont want to walk around downtown Norfolk or the surrounding area at night. Same for Portsmouth, right across the river.

If you want to see the movie, it is called " The Last Detail."

And, yes, the whole area does look better than it did in the 70s and 80s--even though there are crime problems.

They cleaned up Hampton Blvd. No more crap near the base. I was stationed here in Norfolk in the mid 80's and ALOT has changed.

I've never heard that, but that's 'sure how you'd spell Sh1t on a VA license plate. They don't like 'I' for some reason.

I have many family members who have served in the military. They've been all over. The only military town I would call s#$) city would be West Point, KY. Trust me, it's ugly and makes Norfolk look like the Hamptons.
