My husband has been offered a job in Norfolk VA. We know absolutly zero about the area. Where are all the families living in the area. We need a great High School and Middle School. Safe neighborhood and home in the $250,000 range. Lots of youth would be ideal... Thanks for your input..

If you are coming from Orange County, CA you should look at Virginia Beach or Chesapeake ,they both border Norfolk and are close by all part of Tidewater.

Where (approximately) in Norfolk? Norfolk public schools as a whole are not considered that good around here. Virginia Beach and Chesapeake tend to perform better.

I am always tempted to recommend the Kempsville area for convenience to downtown Norfolk or the base. Specifically the areas off of Providence Rd in between the interstate and Kempsville Rd because traffic is good, you are close to shopping/parks, and you have two ways to get home every day if there is an accident. Keep in mind that Whitehurst Landing Rd is the dividing line between Kempsville HS and Tallwood HS if you have a preference for one or the other.

Depending on how big/new of a house you are looking for, you can definitely find something in your price range around there. Either older brick ranches or vinyl siding houses from the 90's for the most part. It is very suburban, lots of families, lots of military, most neighborhoods have a community park. It is about a 20 minute drive to the beach however, if you wanted to be closer there are definitely nice areas down there as well but your commute will be much longer and houses are probably a bit more expensive.

It is going to be a change in terms of vibe, weather, demographics, etc... good luck with the move. Virginia Beach is consistently rated one of the safest places in the country and top places to raise a family so it should be a positive experience.

Check out these sites. There is a lot of info.
