I am hopefully going to move down to the Virgina, Maryland, DC area and it was suggested to me Hampton Road because some of the government agencies are located there and that's where I'm hoping to work at some point.
Is that area nice? Is it a area that civilians can live. How close are they to DC area?

We've been living in Hampton roads (midtown Newport News) for almost five years now. We love it.

There's plenty of military here, but there's also a good proportion of people in the private sector (I'm a SAHM, my husband works for a private company--most of our friends are in the private sector). We really like the weather here and find there are plenty of things to do. It's about a 2-3 hour drive to Washington, D.C. (depending on which part of HR you're living in). We're very happy we moved here.

It really depends what you want out of life. The area is suburban. Most folks that work for NASA, CIA etc... seem to live in York County which is safe and pretty quiet. IF you want an urban environment that is fast paced with lots of cultural amenities then the area is probably not for you. If you like a slower pace and more suburban environment with lots of fishing, kayaking, golfing options at a reasonable price then you'll be right at home IMO.
