My wife and I are looking into moving to Williamsburg. This morning an oil train on its way from N Dakota to the Yorktown terminal derailed in WV. Did not realize that oil trains travel through the Williamsburg area until I heard about this wreck. Is there a lot of controversy over these oil train shipments? Where is the CSX rail line located? I have a map that appears to show a rail line that parallels route 60. Is this the CSX line or the AMTRAK line, or does CSX and AMTRAK share the same line? Is so, then when we look for a place to live we need to make sure we do not live near the rail line?

Thoughts? Comments?

Well, here in in Lynchburg, people who live downtown probably ask themselves the question more frequently these days. This is the same CSX line that goes through Williamsburg and the crude ends up at a location in Yorktown. There is quite a bit of press over this and other derailments; I doubt anyone realized just how serious such a mishap could be, be folks up in Quebec know all to well. Here is a good National Geographic article about that derailment last April. Do a little research; you will find plenty of stories about crude derailments, the latest of which happened at 1:30 today in WV on a train bound for Yorktown.

With very few exceptions (mostly in the NE including Acela) Amtrak uses freight rails.

The rails going through Williamsburg are CSX tracks, and services both CSX and Amtrak. I wouldn't be terribly concerned about oil being shipped through. The bigger concern in the HR area (though not in Williamsburg) is the coal in Norfolk. There was just an article about it the other day... again. Norfolk residents complain of coal dust | WAVY-TV

Trains come in there so infrequently, there really isn't that much of an issue.

Most of the neighborhoods in Williamsburg are no where near the railroad tracks. On a clear night I can hear the train whistle and I live about five miles from the tracks. We have two passenger trains, at least one coal train and I am unsure how many oil trains passing through daily. It doesnt seem to be a concern to locals at this point. I do like the fact that I can drive 10 minutes to the Amtrak station near Colonial Williamsburg, park 50 feet from the terminal, (FREE) and catch the train to Richmond, DC, New York City and beyond.
