While the article seems to cherry pick comparable cities in order perpetuate a certain perspective on them, a lot of cities are "more dangerous" than New York. Technically, Savannah (2015, there were 33 murders in Savannah) is more dangerous than New York. But would anyone think of that city in that way? It's one of those lovely statistics that sounds outrageous when in reality New York has achieved some of the lowest crime/violent crime of any U.S. city, let alone a major city. That isn't to say Norfolk or some of these other cities shouldn't try harder.

Notice how they didn't include cities like Memphis or Baltimore?

I honestly don't think that NYC is a fair comparison for Norfolk. The economic and class situations are very different for the two cities. I think cities like Louisville, Birmingham, Tampa, and Cleveland are fairer comparisons.

Norfolk is dangerous. Period.

That's the point trying to be made here.

Norfolk has some serious issues, but everyone likes to dip their head in the sand and scream 'lalalalalala'.

Or, they like to point fingers and say "St. Louis is more dangerous!"

Time to take some responsibility and fix Norfolk.

With current city leadership(if you can call it that), I doubt we will ever see that happen.

Uh, yeah?

NYC has the lowest crime of any major U.S. city. Savannah isn't known as a particularly low crime city, so it would not be surprising to hear that Savannah (or Norfolk) have higher crime than NYC. In fact I would be shocked if the opposite were true.

So much truth to this.

I think the bigger question is, who cares how it compares to any other city?

Stop with the measuring contests and worry about your own city.

Norfolk is turning into one of the highest crime cities in the country.

Time to stop with the "it is what it is" attitude and make some changes.

I feel perfectly safe walking around NYC after dark. I can't say the same for Norflok.

I never said Norfolk wasn't dangerous, I just thought a more fair comparison was with smaller cities with similar economic situations and sizes, when comparing it specifically to the largest city in the US was not fair. I lived in Louisville for two years, many of the same characteristics as Norfolk and I felt much safer there than Norfolk.

I don't think there is hope for Norfolk until the complex economic issues of the city are resolved.

Has nothing to do with the economic conditions and everything to do with a certain subculture of Norfolk.

Hampton Roads likes to sidestep that one a lot and not tell it like it is. It's like the parent that defends their bad kid after they've done something wrong... "Oh, Johnny is just like that."

Let's not blame the people committing violent acts. No, instead let's blame the economy instead for pulling triggers and robbing people.
