I just got back from Dockside Inn off of Shore Dr (on the Lynnhaven Inlet), and I feel compelled to tell everyone who's interested that it's the best seafood joint in town. Seriously. No, I don't work there, and this isn't a promotional thing. If you've never been you're missing out.

I grew up in this area so I've been to quite a few of the "best" seafood places around, and tonight got me thinking of my personal favorites in Va Beach and what they're best at. Here's my list:

For the best:
Tuna Steak - Dockside Inn
Fried Seafood Platter - Dockside Inn
Broiled Seafood Platter - The Aberdeen Barn (Northampton Blvd)
Crab Cake - Green Parrot (Chicks Beach)
Fish Tacos - Green Parrot
Steamed Shrimp - The Reef (Shore Dr)
Flounder Sandwich - Citrus (W Great Neck Rd)

As I'm sure you guessed, I really don't think it gets much better than the Shore Drive area for good seafood. Anyone agree? Disagree? Have their own list of faves and recommendations?

moving to VA next week and I don't eat seafood at ALL. But I want to try fish only because its good for you and it can't taste all that bad. So my question would be, for a first time trier of fish, what would you recommend? I want something thats not too fishy tasting. Where should I eat at and what should I order?

Croakers! Catfish is awesome as well as the rest of their seafood menu. Hot Tuna did not impress me one bit and I think they are very pricey.
Aberdeen Barn is very versitile. All their food is good!

It really depends on how you cook it, but I think most people go for fried flounder. That seems to be the most common fish used around here anyway. It's my least favorite, however, because of the lack of fish taste, so I'd recommend that if you don't want to go for the fishy stuff. If you feel a little more daring, and want more of the seafood experience, try blackened tuna, mahi, tilapia, or just go for a seafood platter and sample a little bit of everything (usually a piece of flounder, scallops, shrimp, crab cake, and oysters or clam strips depending on where you go). Blackened tuna is my personal favorite so I couldn't leave without recommending that (go to Dockside!). I just had some last night, and I really don't see how anyone could say they didn't like it.

On a side note, and not really seafood by definition, but Virginia Beach has a lot of great sushi restaurants and sushi is really healthy for you too. I don't know if you like sushi, but just a reminder.

I haven't been to Croakers in so long I couldn't tell you if they're good or not. I should go back and give it a try. I've never been to Hot Tuna, but I've heard that before too. Aberdeen Barn is a bit pricey too, but I think it's worth it. Unless you go on a holiday. I took my mother there last Mother's Day, and they had a buffet set-up and that was all you could eat. It was $30 for the buffet, and most of the food by the time we got there had been sitting out and was cold or hard or both. It reminded me of a crappy wedding buffet. Severely disappointed that day, and my sister won't go back now (that was her first Aberdeen Barn experience).

Oh I love Aberdeen for special dinners. Go there every year for my birthday. We went one Mother's Day when my MIL came to visit and yes, a buffet (no matter where you go) has a limited menu.
I had the Salmon at HT and the meal was 25.00. The Salmon itself was a very small portion compared to what I've had elsewhere for the same price and overly seasoned, which did not compliment the fish. The service wasn't much to compare with other restaurants either.
Croakers gets better and better each time we visit. I love the spinach casserole that is served as one of the veggies with a meal.

Yea, I grew up on Lake Perch. I'm from Wisconsin orginally, hate snow and frigid temps, but the lake perch is good. If and when you try saltwater fish, Cod & Haddock would probably be your fish choice.

I went to Croakers last week and didn't see catfish on the menu. Maybe I missed it. Do you know if they still serve it?

I had stuffed Mahi-Mahi, but I'm not in HR right now. Did you ask the waitress, because they have specials every nite. It's not normally on the menu
