I'm a firefighter/emt with a background in underground utilities and a construction superintendent. I'll be moving with no job lined up. Some might say it's crazy but living life in a place that your not happy in is crazy. I would love some info on how employment in Norfolk and Va,beach are now and if there are furnished studio apts? Pretty much any info for the area would be greatful.

Try Fort Carson in Colorado- a bunch of fire positions are opening up or will open up. I used to live in AZ too up until 1994 and lived in CO from 1994 until last week. My own DH is govt fire fighter and used to work at USAFA in COS, making around 65K a year. He just took job transfer to Langley AFB due to a health issue that wouldn't allow him to stay on the floor. If you are interested in getting into the Dod system, check out USAjob.com and dodfire.com forum for help with getting in. My DHs screen name is fireman_jake so feel free to PM him in the forum. Good luck.

Duh, of course keep checking for jobs in VA area too. Since we just got here, I thought I would pass on the info about some def jobs in CO and how to help you get into the system.

Froggin', he's movin' to VA, but good advice should he change his mind and head north. We run the gov. employee contracts out there, but I've seen no openings for the position you mentioned.

Not going to be easy to find a good job right now, Virginia has been hit hard also with this economy. Firefighter/emt jobs are out there but most cities have hiring freezes on right now, they will take your application but don't expect to hear from them real soon as they are pretty much only filling positions body for body when someone retires or gets fired etc...

Dominion power just had a major layoff so any positions filled there will be more on a recall type bases so I dont think you will have much luck there, not sure how hard Cox cable has been hit so you might try them but again don't expect anything overnight....

Also compare the cost of living from where you live now to where you would like to reside in Va.......As I am sure you have read that both Northern Va and Hampton Roads has very expensive real estate prices so consider that before making the move

Ok, i'll ask the stupid question- have you ever been to Virginia Beach/Norfolk area to even know you are going to like it? And did you leave your current job before finding one here? Any jobs are hard to find currently- I wouldn't just go up and move until you have something lined up. And do you know about the jet noise here?

If he has funds, why not? It could be an interesting adventure. Ever been to Arizona? Aircraft are there too!

Ft. Eustis will be hiring soon too- they are about 19 people (ff) short. Keep your eyes open for that. They already hired the medics for Fort Carson. I mentioned CO because I was thinking of the cost of living- same pay but you can buy a 5 bedroom 2 bath home for 150K. It was just a thought...
