Just curious how koreans are treated in Hawaii, specifically the Hilo area. Ive been researching places to move to in the near future and Hilo fit most of my requirements.

Ask our ex-Mayor, Harry Kim, how Koreans are treated in Hilo. He won by a landslide and I heard that he refused to accept campaign funds of more than $5 from any one person (or entity) since he said folks needed their money more than he did. He also said the County employees should do what's right and then if necessary check to make sure it was legal. When he was in parades, he'd usually walk instead of ride in a convertible. He was a great mayor. He was also Korean, although nobody really mentioned it much. Mostly they'd mention that he used to be the head of Civil Defense. He was mayor for two terms and then couldn't run again, if he could, he would have been elected again, no doubt.

Ditto.

I'll also add that you may hear some ethnic jokes, but you'll hear them about every race. There's just not the whole PC cap on making a joke here. Sometimes people have selective hearing and will laugh at all the jokes until they resemble that remark, then upset follows.

Teasing is a big part of the humor here. I admit I was at first shocked to hear what my neighbors teased each other about, and had to calm my own ruffled feathers. Then I realized that the teasing pretty much indicated they were comfortable with me, as newbies were treated with careful courtesy and aloha, but the teasing came when I was really on the inside.

Usually they create Korean organizations, where they'll pool their money together, and lend it to a person, one at a time, among that community.

There is a name for that...can't remember it, but common practice among Korean communities abroad.

This was also done by the Issei in the early 1900s - though I'm not sure whether the practice continues.

It's called a "kye" in Korean, "tanomoshi" in Japanese, and "hui" in Hawaiian and Pidgin.
