Do any believe, or know, that Hawaii is headed the way of these states mentioned in the article ?

The Six States Where Taxes Are Soaring - 24/7 Wall St.

Prices are high already, but are housing costs and services driving more potential for increases ? Would be great to know for moving plans months away...and...affects they may bring later. Thx

We already have a good sense wages are lowest in the US while cost of living is the highest. I "think" our state income tax, especially at the highst rate is the highest in the US

Car registration has about doubled in the past several years. Seems all governmental fees and charges have taken a hike upwards. Haven't seen any salary or wage increase and most governmental employees have been dealing with pay cuts (furloughs) for the past several years. Little bites here and there, it all adds up after awhile.

I was chatting with a Midwest farmer/irrigation installer the other week. He was the company owner. It was amazing all the perks and benefits they paid their workers in order to get good help. College help, medical benefits, help with getting housing, company truck, etc., etc. Of course, you're not living in Hawaii, but other than that it seems they are living really well. Especially when one considers the much lower cost of living in that area. I think they have to pay taxes on stuff they own, though. So far that's one tax Hawaii hasn't quite gotten into.

Yes, very beautiful, but landscape does not sustain you in life. Not trying to batter the place, just realistic. More bang for the buck with less loss, in many other world locations. Too much in Oahu is run down, and focus in tourist areas is the apparent emphasis at detriment to the remaining. If it were 1950s or 60s, maybe different. Not now. Longer drive? Brace yourself for more than that. Wanna surf? Go to Costa Rica -Jaco, Pacific coast. Cheaper by far? Panama , Belize, or Cuenca, Ecuador.
So why bother with this question? Correct me if I'm wrong, but state taxes are voted on by the elected representatives of the people of the state (under the influence of lobbyists and campaign donations, but shhhh). Sure, go ahead and discuss it one way or the other, but it ain't going to do anything except to get people all riled up. Is that what you're trying to do?

You know, I don't think the taxes in your state aren't high enough. If they were high enough, you'd be spending all your time fighting them instead of posting in the Hawaii forum. When I move to your state, I'm going to vote to raise them. Please discuss (or not, if you don't have a sense of humor, ha ha).

Married Couple $50,000 Income
-$2,339 Hawaii tax
-$2,907 federal tax
$44,755 after tax
-----------------------

Ouch.
Add in the effects of the 4.167% GET (higher on Oahu) which affects everything, including food, medicine, doctor...and you see why Hawaii actually has some of the highest taxes. Hawaii may also be the only state that will tax a single dollar of taxable income at 1.4%.

That federal number seems low. But the state is about the same as Oregon, and then we have high property taxes on top of that. They have also been trying to add a sales tax.

I think your numbers are to low also:

$50,000 income, married 1 deduction each

$4,845 Federal

$2,100 Social Security

$725 Medicare

$2,780 Hawaii State Tax

$235 SDI

$39,315 Take home less any other deductions for healthcare, 401K, etc

They weren't my numbers - I just copied from the chart that McFrostyJ provided...
Because of the picture by that chart - which included 1 child, it may be more accurate.
