yo peeps, i'll be sharing the luxury of living there with some of you within the year and have been scouting this forum for quite some time. Question is when you've done everything on the island, maybe island hopped and done things there, what normally goes on after work. Retired military people i work with tell me it's a party 24/7 but that was a long time ago and that's the military for ya.

I understand about embracing the lifestyle and culture, but what all does that include? I got a few books on Hawaii but hearing it from real people is what makes a story come to life in my opinion. I have an idea of basically how things might work; job, kitesurf, rest, bike, eat, sleep, repeat... of course there will be the weekends where hiking, exploring, and other activities that take all day would occur.

I was just wondering how things go in normal life there, not vacation life.

I think you had it right in the general area -

In answer to your question - no, it is not a 24/7 party here like New Orleans or Miami - or resort locations like Cancun are. Waikiki is the closest thing but still a large gap in terms of partying. Kauai is fairly sleepy all over, followed by the Big Island, and it picks up a bit in Maui around the resort areas - but no raging party lifestyle.

Everyday life is work, cleaners, shop, and have some fun when you can. Surfing everyday is possible if you are an early riser and can balance that if you have a family.

A good place to start is with the back archives here. There's a wealth of information to be found there.

We do everything we'd do on the mainland, except much slower. When you go to Sears, you expect to take much longer at the cashier because people in front of you are talking story. When you drive somewhere, you go much slower (at least on the Big Island), and you stop to let people pull onto the road or to make a left turn. When you go to drop something off at someone's house, expect to stay and talk story for an hour or so.
