3 to 4 days out of five will have rain at some point during the day. However, except in winter, much of that rain comes at night. During the winter, though, there can be many-day stretches when rain system after rain system moves through. It's kind of cool -- the first two dozen times ; -- to watch the rain out over the ocean heading for land.

Rain in the Hilo area is also hugely variable with elevation (among other factors.

I live on Oahu and I've become complacent long ago about weather warnings. Flash floods. Hurricanes. Storms. I never noticed them. Hurricanes don't do anything here. Floods don't do anything here. Storms are inconvenient but rare.

Some days it rains a drizzle. Some days it don't rain at all. One season it rains every morning. Occasionally it rains heavily.

It starts and stops a lot. However, this week we had 3 great days with almost no rain at all during the day. Sunny, very clear (no VOG to speak of in Hilo, as is usually the case) and quite warm. You tend to miss the rain as it cools things down. I thought I was in Kona it was so hot...
