Up until the late 70s - early 80s, you didn't see but a few homeless anywhere. The family (ohana) took care of their own. Tragically, the situation has steadily worsened over the decades, with the high cost of housing being the primary culprit along with long-term cultural assimilation difficulties.
The point is homelessness was no where the problem it is today, not even close. To argue that economic hardtimes lately is the cause of increased homelessness is also really not the truth or whole picture. The last few years economics have been awsome for a small group, no other times have we seen such economic prosperity for this group. Maybe the issue is unequal wealth distribution?

Let me ask you a question? In the last homeless count, how many were living in Hawaii less then 2 years? An indicator that they are from mainland. How many have lived on Hawaii for 10+ years (majority right)? Recent guesses are 18 percent were in Hawaii more than a year but less than 10 years. 1 in every 5 homeless persons is mainland. Really not to effective.
Your quote: If you want to help the homeless problem - stop encouraging those with dismal prospects to move to Hawaii. end quote:
Maybe we should limit rich people from moving to Hawaii and lower housing costs.
In 2013 - at least 35% of the homeless have been Hawaii residents for less than 10 years (they came from somewhere else). 8% have been Hawaii residents less than 1 year - think about it, a staggering number.
Most homeless are Caucasian in a state where they are a clear minority.

That would mean nearly 65% of the homeless have been living in Hawaii more than 10 years and some would consider that staggering as well...just doing the math based on your statement.

That wouldn't be very good math. The reason I said "at least" is because there is a sizable percentage where they don't know how long the person has been here.

The main problem with using the "Homeless Service Utilization Report" is that it doesn't provide an accurate count of the homeless population -- it simply counts folks that used services that are meant for the homeless. The State of Hawaiʻi Department of Human Services and the City & County of Honolulu Department of Community Services prepares an annual "Statewide Homeless Point-in-Time Count" that provides another set of statistics for policymakers to use… http://humanservices.hawaii.gov/bess...ev-CP-5.91.pdf
liberate Hawaii, and make it an independent nation. Then order everybody who does not have a drop of kānaka ʻōiwi, kānaka maoli, and Hawaiʻi maoli blood inside of them, to vacate, and leave immediately, or order everybody who refuses to revolk their US citizenship to leave immediately. After a time period, order all the homeless people living in cars to get job training. Finally bann all mode of transportation, that is not public ( like buscars etc ). Trade all the metal in for money, and give it back to the ex-homeless-people.
Clean sweep? No homeless people, and we nip that population problem in the behind. Imagine, if this was Easter Island.

But we can discuss rich haole hawaii sovereignty all we want.
I'd take that to the "Politics and Other Controversies forum" as well, along with any other discussion that has the potential for "controversy."
