What do you all think? Should Hawaii do away with plastic bags?

I picked up two reBags from KTA this afternoon...(my shopping list was short). I'm going to try to make a point to keep them in my car and use them.

On the other hand, at my house, we usually re-use the plastic store bags for trash bags (when we aren't expecting company!)...we keep a small trash can in the kitchen with one of the store bags and then transfer that bag into a regular trash can after making dinner. Makes for less messy trash... I guess we will still bring home plastic when we do larger shopping trips?

What is your vote on this one?

Just want to add: on Hawaii people live a lot closer to nature then people in big cities. So you want to protect that nature. From my experince with paper bags from Trader Joe - they woks very well and even more convenient then plastic bags.

Has it now been proven that paper bags are more environmentally sound? I remember a few years ago hearing that if we recycle the plastic ones they are actually better (or at least no worse), because of the trees cut to make paper bags (even recycled ones are not usually 100% post-consumer content), energy used to make them, etc.

Still best, I think, to reuse bags, and sturdy cloth ones are the best for that.

well, i'm still undecided on the issue. we reuse the plastic bags for our dogs' and cats' messes and also for adult diaper disposal (family member is incontinent).

Good point--I don't think that there is agreement about which (paper or plastic) comes at a greater cost.

But we have problems with plastic bags finding their way into the ocean...

Default hmmmm...

It's such a toss up between the two. I have about 100 uses for both of them. Plastic gets recycled as a refridgerator wrap for things. Paper gets used for wrapping presents (looks terrific) and toting things around as long as they have those handy-dandy little handles on them.

Last weekend I had a bit of a tiff at Walmart. You know, they put everything in it's own plastic bag. I had the checker combine the 8 bags I had been given into one bag and then I stepped up on my soap box and explained it all to her. Went right over her head but it was kinda comical by the time I got to our car. I was laughing pretty hard.

So, I don't know... I know I haven't used plastic since watching the travel channel special 'Hawaii-message in the waves'
