One of my wife's specialist is no longer accepting our health insurance. We've been going to him for over 10-12 years. Because he doesn't take our insurance, we want to know what it cost without insurance. His nurses say they have to look at my taxes to see how much we make in order to charge us appropriately.

So my health insurance has gone from $250/month over 10 years ago to $525 just 5 years ago and $750/month last year for family. Next year it is going up to $900/month yet we're getting less coverage and less use because doctors not accepting the plan. But you can't even just go without insurance as you get fined and the cost of no insurance visit is expensive and discriminates middle class people because of pay.= scale.

When we were briefly without insurance, our doctors charged self pay patients the Medicare rate. Before I would provide personal financial information, I would switch specialists.

They might need to see your returns of their office has a sliding fee scale based on your ability to pay. Many providers usually just give a percentage off their total billed charge for self pay.

Theres an OB who doesnt take my insurance. You have to pay $500 up front and the rest of the $2000 by 30 some odd weeks.

Id gladly save every penny i could to go to him because he is a great dr..If your dr is like that, save your pennies and keep going.

The thing is, this doctor is intending to charge what the traffic will bear. His price should be his price.
As I said earlier, my doctors charge the Medicare rate for self pay patients, not " if you have more money, I want more money".

I'm probably going to give a big middle finger to insurance companies. Given that I've never spent so many money in anger and frustration ever.

Our doctor is a good man and I'm sure he's said what he's said for his own reasons.

Your Dr. may want to see whether you are a safe bet. If you have good income and a good job, he might be willing to accept you as a credit risk. If not, he may prefer to lose you as a patient than to risk treating you for free. Or he might insist on payment in advance. Many business will offer a lower rate to someone who is certain to pay on time and without risk of default, than they will to unknown or risky customers.
