DH and I know someone who gets the ACA subsidies but is heavily invested in real estate. He owns several million-dollar+ apartments on the beach that he operates as monthly rentals. I don't know what he declares as income because I think to be eligible for a subsidy you have to show you have a job. He could be paying himself a minimal salary for the operation of the rentals or perhaps declaring income from a hobby as his job.
The thing is, he doesn't want the insurance. He spends most of his time in another country, living in a fully-paid for luxury home. They have excellent, inexpensive healthcare that he pays for out of pocket or perhaps he has a policy there. He gets treated there for anything that comes up. He is never going to use his insurance unless he happens to have an emergency while visiting his properties a few days a year. He had to get insurance a few years ago when his accountant told him he'd need to put it on his tax return - but then let him know it could be subsidized. I think the guy pays around $100/month, and he's late 50's/early 60's.

We used to be rewarded with lower premiums for staying healthy, no more.
I don't ever recall getting rewarded for staying healthy, at least through our health insurance plan. But I do recall rate increases every time either of us had a landmark birthday, e.g. age 35, 40, etc. This would be under a an individual policy, though.
FYI, there is no requirement to have a job to collect a subsidy. The questions are based strictly on your adjusted gross income from whatever sources it comes from.
Yes the rulemakers blew it when they made eligibility based only on income, not assets, but whose fault is that? When Trump was criticized for not paying income taxes some years well that is kudos to him for planning properly as he did follow the rules as written as evidenced by the frequent IRS audits. So for those that collect subsidies in spite of their assets I say well done as you are playing by the rules just as Donald was/is.

And when Donald Trump is society's model of an ethical person, we're all in trouble.
