I am retired as of October 18. I turn 65 on the 15th.
My spouse, however, is 62 - 2.5 years younger.
I will keep him on my employer's health insurance (we have a Retiree Health Plan) for 20 months - but we are moving to California to retire.
His premium with my employer is $489 a month. We would like to find an insurer that either is cheaper or can be his bridge for the 9 months between when this employer-sponsored health care ends - and Medicare for him begins.
Looking in the central coast/Northern Monterey County Area. Will travel for good docs.
I've heard Kaiser is good - Spouse had Kaiser 25 years ago before we left Los Angeles for Utah.
Unless you qualify for subsidies, the monthly premium will be significantly more than $500 per month. It will probably be in the neighborhood of $1000 per month.
Here is a page with all the 2019 rate and area information for Blue Shield of California. I've found his site to be very informative. Monterey County appears to be one of the most expensive counties in the state as far as insurance rating areas. The Central Coast rating area includes San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and Ventura counties all in the same rating area, and the rate is quite a bit lower than Monterey County.
If you live in a zip code within Monterey County, Kaiser is not offered, not as far as I know. A family member lives there and is a bit younger than your husband. The cheapest rate for an unsubsidized Off Exchange Individual Bronze plan is increasing to around $1300/month for 2019. Just one County away in San Luis Obispo is a different rating area and is significantly less expensive. If you're able to live in a Kaiser area, people report being very happy with their care.
