My husband was laid off in September 2017. We were fortunate enough to find a plan through the ACA marketplace that was close to what we had through his job. Our income allowed for a decent subsidy to help pay the premium. I have an autoimmune illness that requires several specialists, so we made sure I would be taken care of. I'll be honest, it ended up saving my husband's life. He was diagnosed with cancer and had surgery three months ago. He's doing well, but will need visits with his oncologist every six months.

We are in the Raleigh, NC area.

The plan we currently have is with BCBS in NC. We received a notice that they are discontinuing our plan for 2019. If we want to stay with them, we'll have to switch to UNC/Rex Healthcare doctors. All of our specialists are with Duke. (His oncologist, my group of doctors) The only option to keep our Duke doctors is with Ambetter. It's new to NC, and I have no idea what to expect. They advertise that they are the only way to see our Duke and Wake Med doctors.

The premium is a little higher than what we're paying this year, and the deductibles are a little higher. It's not outrageous; however the new BCBS is a much lower option.

Hubby's oncologist is on the list of providers, so that's a big plus. But, I'm starting to notice that many of my doctors don't show up on their provider list, even though another doctor from that specialty might. One doctor is covered at the hospital clinic, but not at the one closer to my house (meaning I'd have to pay the outpatient facility rate). I've spent 7-8 years in the Duke system and finally have my health somewhat stable. I really don't want to find new doctors. Our PCP's office will be out-of-network, but because I go to them for pain management, I can't switch. I figure it's worth it to pay OON every three months. (Plus, he's been my PCP for 20 years! He's practically part of the family!)

Does anyone have any experience with them?

Thanks in advance!

they have bad reviews online, but who knows, of course people who get the end of the stick are going to complain, but pretty much every insurance company out there has bad reviews

I just got ambetter through marketplace, first time i'm going to have health insurance and it will start in january, we'll see, but I'm only going to pay $3 a month, thanks to the premium discount you get

I have had coverage through the ACA since 2016. Just renewed with Ambetter for the 3rd time. Have had basically good experiences with this company. When I renewed for 2019, Ambetter now offers 11 different plans in my area (Chicago). It also offers a MyHealthPays reward system, in which you accumulate money on a VISA card, that can be used for health related expenses, such as prescriptions. In 2018, I earned $125. This card can also be used to pay your monthly premium.

In Illinois, Ambetter is marketed as IlliniCare. I joined its HMO, and my deductions and co-pays are $600 each annually. After meeting those amounts, I don't have any out of pocket expenses. The only downside is that I have to use in network physicians and hospitals, unless it's an emergency. But, I believe that most HMOs use that business model.

So, from my perspective, Ambetter is the best choice for me. Hope that things work out for you and your family.
