If you or someone in your family broke their back, would you rather be covered under a private health insurance plan provided by your employer or a govt financed one?

I'm a big proponent for universal healthcare. While I don't always want the government's fingers in my life, the system we have with private health insurance is a disaster and only seems to be getting worse. I don't think it will happen in my lifetime, but that's what I would like.

First we need to admit that what is referred to as health care is actually sick care. Real health care is living a healthy lifestyle. Going to doctors for screenings, drugs, and surgery is sick care. As a person who lives a healthy lifestyle, I resent paying higher premiums ( wether it be to the government or private business ) for the sick care of people who eat crappy food, smoke cigarettes, and won't exerecise. There is no proposal currently being floated that addresses health care. Every proposal out there will continue the same old sick care system that supports unhealthy lifestyles and stuffs the pockets of hospitals and big pharma. The only difference is; who pays for it. Let's face it, we have no health care system.

Here's a great article that goes into much greater detail. The Politics of National Health Care Reform: Why no Popular Presidential Candidate can Solve Our Health Care Crisis

redneck, i agree 100%. My husband and I do what we can to stay healthy (naturally) and would not be happy to have higher taxes to cover other people's poor health. I went thru a health issue years ago, conventional drs said i'd be on meds the rest of my life. luckily, i found natural health, not covered by insurance, and have not been to a conventional dr since. unless i have an emergency, i don't want to pay for something i don't use.

Stoymonkey, that reminds me of the time i was diagnosed with hypertension years ago. The doctor told me i would be on blood pressure meds for life. I looked and him and said "No, i won't." That's when i decided to be proactive and do something about my health once and for all.
I also do not wish to pay higher taxes for the lazybones among us. Too many sheep thinking their doctors are gods. They aren't. They just want your money.

One good illness can bankrupt you.The system now will pick your bones clean and leave nothing. You mean to say you can handle $100,000 up bill out of pocket? The rich and government employee are fine along with bottom. The middle gets shafted.

If you think that if you live a good lifestyle now you don't pay for those who don't or have natural health crisis, you are fooling your self. Unless you don't pay more now in premiums than when you started health insurance. Insurance of all kind is to make a profit. They do not want us to be healthy.

Good for you PinkString. DanBev, not sure what you were referring to, about $100,000, but my husband and I do have insurance, since it is required by our jobs. I just choose to live an "alternative health lifestyle" and am happy the way things are. i know i may be in the minority though.
