No, unless your have an abnormally low tolerance for pain, it doesn't hurt at all. They took the stitches out after my surgery and I didn't even feel it.
Not to worry. I watched but if that makes you queasy, just turn your head and you probably won't feel it either.
Many times the stitches come out by themselves. If not, do what happycamper suggests. There is usually no reason to pay the doctor to take them out unless there is a major concern. Just make sure that you don't take them out too early. Most stitches stay in about 7 days, but areas where you are bending (such as knees) take longer.
The stitches I have right now are supposed to come out on their own. Today is the first day I can shower after surgery on Wednesday - WOOHOO!!!! I'm so sick and tired of laying on my back....... abdominal surgery sucks.
The last stitches I had were on my knee and those had to be taken out. A friend did it for me that is a nurse. Did not hurt at all.
Where they are and how long they have been there for will spell how uncomfortable they are. I had stitches on the aureola area next to the nipple where the skin is very thin and very soft after removal of a cyst. The doctor cannot put sutures there that dissolve on their own because the skin has to be kept close together for minimal scarring and only real gut sutures would do that. When skin grows over sutures, they are buried under the skin. The doctor has to go in deeper to be able to cut, and then pull out those sutures with skin over it. In the breast area close to the nipples...well uhmmm...let's just say I preferred the staples across my belly after 2 C-sections!
It feels like when you pull a hair out with tweezers.
