It's been one year now since my sinus started acting up and they haven't really gone away since then. Of course, I have good and bad days. Some days my sinus is almost completely cleared up but this only lasts a few days at the most. Then it's back to the usual. But even on my good days, I still feel some sinus congestion in my nose.
I get headaches, congestion, sneezes, bad tastes in mouth, the need to spit up mucus, dizziness, vision problems, fatigue and brain fogs. I also have slight trouble breathing through my nose. I can't breathe smooth and clear like I should.
I've gone to three different ENT doctors and they've all said the same thing, "take Zyrtec and Sudafed". Which is what I've been doing but have had limited results.
One of the ENT doctors said the left side of my nose is slightly deviated. I also want to add in that I accidentally got hit real hard in the nose about 5 years ago which left a bump on my nose. Maybe that has something to do with my sinus problems.
I'd try a neti pot.
Get a good ceramic one at your health food store or on-line.
Use distilled or purified water (filtered, bottled).
Use sea salt.
Heat the water .... not too hot.
Add the salt to the hot water ... about a teaspoon or so. You don't want to use too much or it'll burn.
Over the sink tilt your head and insert the neti pot spout in one nostril and let it run out the other.
Repeat with other nostril.
This may take a while to get used to but once you get the hang of it it's as easy as pie and may do wonders for your sinuses.
My mom has chronic sinusitis for the past 25 years. She had the sinus surgery in 1997 and had polups removed. She also had her deviated sptum fixed. She's taken zyrtec, flonase, nasonex you name it. The neti pot is good though or saline nose spray. Needless to say she has lost her taste and smell and only sometimes does she taste and smell foods. She is going to a new ENT and he said everything looked good in her sinus cavity and that another surgery was not needed. It's terrible when you constantly get sinus infections, can't taste or smell.
I think I am the queen of sinus infections. Advil Sinus (an ibupropen over the counter, but back of the pharmacist) was my best relief. Also the Neti pot helped. What really helped me was hanging my head over the sink and sniffing in warm water into my nostrils. Also the hot shower was good. Warm compresses to the forehead and snorting out the mucus(no swallowing it) helps. I have a deviated septum but no polyps. Allergies contribute alot to sinus infections. When my mucus was yellow, or green or brown, I went to the doc and got antibiotics. You will hear its not supposed to work with sinus, but believe me, it does. Best to you.
I read the article and I don't doubt stress can cause you to get sick. You sound like my mom's therapist. She says she brings on the sinus infections herself. I don't think that's true. My mom's simus problems are chronic and so is her lost of taste and smell. I doubt she brought that on herself.
I am a chronic sinus sufferer too. I take Mucinex D twice a day, everyday to relieve the pressure. Today on Dr. Oz he suggested humming, yes humming, for relief. I plan to give this a try in the shower where I figure I'll get a double punch of relief.
While stress can certainly lower your immunity, no doubt about that, I think you are more likely to develop high blood pressure, headaches, and stomach problems instead of sinus infections.
