That's the best way I can describe it. Since I believe I was a teen, I'd get an occasional painful foot spasm. Fast forward to now, I get them more often & I can literally see this nerve in my foot spasming (it's in a clenched position making my foot look wierd) & the intense pain even goes up my leg a little. It can last quite a while (maybe several min tops) & there's nothing I can do, but be in agonizing pain until it's over. I've NEVER felt such intense agonizing pain in my life! It doesn't throb, but it's like a burning pain. If I repeatedly gently hit/massage the area, it may relieve it a tad, but the pain isn't completely over until it stops on it's own.
Do any of you get this? Is there anything to get rid of them? And no, I've never been to the dr about it.
My wife has the feet cramping and pain all the time, has for over 40 years, she has Multiple Sclerosis and that's part of her MS symptom. You probably don't have that situation since you didn't mention any other health problem(s).
You should have a doctor look and test for a pinched nerve. What you describe is usually nerve related.

Possibly a pinched nerve and not enough hydration; you may also have something blocked the blood flow, hard to say without being a medical professional or chiropractor.
Why haven't you been to the doctor? It could be Planter Fasciitis..sometimes treated in shoe inserts, excerise or surgery. I know several ppl who have PF. It's painful and no fun.

Could be one and dozen of any of the things mentioned here, but I get those foot and leg spasms and yes, they do make the toes look strange. I also suffer with Planter Fasciitis, shoe inserts, proper shoes, never going barefoot helps. Believe it or not, eating one of my favorite fruits, bananas, brings on my leg an foot spasms and cramps moments after eating them. I avoid eating them for the most part.
Best thing to do is talk with your doctor, though my regular physician wasn't much help, in my case, however, better see the doctor so they can, at the very least, rule out any serious ailments. When the intensity of the pain became unbearable, seeing a foot specialist helped. The foot brace and cordisone shot in the heel were useless, but the shoe changes, foot stretching and not going barefoot, helped tremendously, but the moment, I lack in any of those things, the pain comes back two fold.
My husband gets it on occasion. Nothing wrong with him, that I know of. I guess it happens so rarely, he hasn't gone to the doctors for that. He just waits it out, which like you said, takes a few minutes of pain. Maybe magnesium and/or something high in potassium might help.
Thanks guys for your comments! I never noticed any connection personally regarding whether eating bananas brought it on or helped it. I Googled the condition & it also said about a deficiency in vitamin D too. Uh-oh, I've walked barefeet my whole life at home!...I know, bad habit. I have those Okabashi slippers that I like & wear around the house at times. They do feel good when I'm wearing them. I'll keep trying to drink more water. I take vitamins when I can, not daily, but I take them.
Now the cramps/spasms started happening way, way before this, but in 2008, I ruptured my Achilles tendon & I think the spasms may be worse (in frequency & pain) after that happened. But I've pretty much always worn good quality shoes my whole life & even moreseo since my ankle injury. Coincidentally, the spasms only really happen in my left foot & it was my left ankle that I injured.
Also, my dad would get cramps/spasms sometimes in his calf & very rarely, so does my mom, so I wonder is this kind of thing hereditary?

Yes, please go to a Podiatrist and have them figure out what's wrong.
Try drinking Gatorade daily; it contains electrolites which you might be low on.
