My daughter seems to think she has fleas in her head, but the house and the animal do not have them. Could it be something else?

So, have you actually looked at her head?

Do your dog or cat have fleas? If not i'd doubt fleas would prefer your daughter and i would suspect a lice problem.First thing to do is vigorously check the girls hair sor live lice or their eggs (Nits).

Fleas are heat-seekers and will always choose to live on a dog (whose temperature is 101) rather than a person.

The only time someone is bitten by fleas where there is a dog is if the flea infestation is too great for the number of dogs.

I agree that your problem might be lice or bedbugs.

Head lice in school age children is quite prevalent. Here are some sites to click on for more information on how to detect them and prevention.

have your daughter get in the bathtub, and Get a bottle of cheap hair conditioner and dump the whole thing on her head. If she has lice they'll fall off, and it makes it easy to comb the nits out.
Don't freak out if it's lice...it's quite common and easily rectified...and has nothing to do with how clean her hair is or not.
Check behind her ears and around the neckline of her hair...that's usually where you'll see them. Don't be afraid to look...hopefully it's not lice, though I doubt very much that it's fleas. She might even have a very dry scalp that's making her itchy.
