I'm in my 20's and have had ankle fusions in both my feet. One foot has developed arthritis. It has become stiff, painful, and has popping noises constantly. I can no longer run and my balance is horrible. Before the surgery I loved to run and exercise but my feet always act up whenever I use them now.

I don't hear too many experiences about people under 40 with arthritis and it really depresses me. I feel like I'm going to miss out on some of the best years of my life considering jogging, hiking, and exercise were my number 1 hobbies. And I can't really play sports with my friends anymore. I'd like to hear more from other people with this arthritis.

I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis when I was 32 and Osteoarthritis when I was around 36 or so. I am 40 now.

What is your diagnosis?

Hi Pikantari, I have osteoarthritis in my left ankle. My doctor says eventually it will happen in my right foot as well. I initially had severely flat feet and a torn ligament, and the ankle fusion surgeries intended to "fix" it brought on the arthritis and balance problems.

How has arthritis affected your life? Do you take pain medicine daily? My doctor says that's an option but I declined because I don't want to feel lethargic every day.

our daughter now in her early 50s has had some in her knees since she was in elementary school. yes, it is depressing, but it is also something you can live with. BTW you can still do a lot of your favorite activities, just not to the same extent.

I do not take pain medicine daily, I actually rarely ever do. Sounds like what I have heard happening to a lot of athletes. Osteo comes from wear and tear of the joints. You are young to have it but you also use those joints quite a bit.

I imagine my arthritis has effected me much differently than yours. For instance, I had to take my weekly chemotherapy last night and today I am in an awful way.

It's a different kind than what you have, though I do have your type in my knees and hips.

Have they not given you any other options besides pain medications?

Pikantari, yeah I probably would have gotten osteoarthritis eventually, as I did a lot of work with my legs. Too bad about it being so soon though. My doc sad pain meds are the only option at this point. I've tried physical therapy but it didn't make a difference. Even the therapist was amazed at how little mobility my foot had. Once I put full weight on my left foot I get a sharp pain from my ankle. So whenever I try to stretch my left leg or try to walk normally the pain comes back.

CCc girl, I'll look into the alfalfa, thanks.

Originally I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis but the doctors now think it was psoriatic arthritis which is caused by psoriasis. When I was younger a doctor told me I had arthritis around late teens early 20's but never told me what kind. Mine is getting worse and am in the process of applying for disability because it prevents me from getting a lot of jobs that require standing or lifting.
