How does an uninformed person make a selection?

googling gets (at best) a list of names LINK
..but mostly it just returns the names of spa's and organized businesses.

How do you pick through them?
How do objectively evaluate?

First decide what type of massage you want, Google to see what they are. Then look for someone who does that type. I go to one associated with a chiropractic clinic. I don't see the chiropractor.

If this is really how you looked it up, I would suggest just going to Google instead of Google Maps. I just Googled "Massage Winston Salem" and it took me maybe two minutes to find a whole bunch of massage therapists in or near Winston Salem that had good reviews. If you go to an established spa or massage center that has been around for a while, got good reviews, and has more than one therapist, it make take you a couple of times, but you should find someone you like.

I also see you can get Angie's List for that area. There is a fee for membership, but when I lived in Minneapolis I found Angie's List to be extremely helpful in finding all kinds of providers.

Like SouthernBellInUtah, I'd go to one associated with a chiropractor, or other medical professional. We have a physical therapy group nearby, and they are the most often referred by the local doctors who treat physical injuries. They've been in business for at least 35 years (that's when I first had to visit them), and they have a solid reputation and a solid anchor in the community. Their group includes massage therapists who are referred to by the same doctors AND by chiropractors and naturopathic doctors. They'd be my one and only go-to if I needed a medical massage.

For a general "pampering" relaxation massage, I'd just go to the local beauty spa
