I don't actually mind using the Ambien and don't think Dr's would tell me no since it's been working for a couple years. I've stopped taking it off and on over the years with no bad effects, trying to see if my problem has gone away or not. I don't even use it every night but about 70% of the time I'd say. I guess everyone is different huh? My sleep problems started in my 50's, before that I could and did fall asleep anywhere. I may be on it long term or forever or I may not be. Don't know, don't care.

That's how I feel. I've been using a combination of melatonin and the Costco version of Unisom for several years. I do use them every night, but I don't really worry about long-term consequences of doing so. I worry about sleeping.
If I hadn't taken and tried it myself, I would have never believed it...motion sickness pills. I was taking some medication that made me very sick every time I tried to get into a car. So I bought Diphenhydramine a motion sickness OTC medication. After taking it I was in the passenger seat of a car and had to be woken up upon arrival of where we were going, I was shocked. Than I started looking at OTC sleep aids and found that both types of motion sickness meds are used in OTC sleep meds.
I have no hangover from them and they work like magic for me. Moderation in all things of course.
2 acetaminophen PM tablets when I turn off the light. I don't need them to help me fall asleep, but they stopped that "waking up at 3:00 AM" thing. When I was working, took only a half tablet so I wouldn't oversleep, but now that I'm retired, I take two and sleep till I wake up naturally. My daughter is a doctor, and assures me that they are not habit forming.
The ingredient in those that helps you sleep is OTC diphenhydramine (the generic form is available at any store as either a sleep or allergy medication). Buy it "straight," and it'll be a lot cheaper without your needlessly also ingesting acetamenophine (a pain reliever), which has in fact been linked to kidney damage. Never take any medication you don't need; that's the problem with this combination/cocktail drugs. I'm surprised your daughter didn't tell you this...
