After they compromise their health and/or shorten their life, who picks up the pieces from that? Steroids have terrible side effects and there are many people who don't even want to use them for legitimate medical reasons. After one short Dosepak years ago, my father's blood sugar elevated and remained elevated so that he needed to go on oral diabetic medication for the rest of his life - he couldn't even get it back in control with strict diet and exercise. That was from just one short course of properly prescribed steroids for an allergic reaction.
The side effects of long-term use include osteoporosis, 'roid rage, cholesterol build-up and subsequent heart disease escalation, impotence after long-term use, terrible acne, jaundice, stomach ulcer, fluid retention/bloating, increased infections, poor healing, cataracts/eye changes, menstrual difficulties in women, and high blood pressure. I researched this extensively when my grandfather took a prolonged course for his lung disease. What ended up happening is the osteoporosis side effects had him in severe pain 24/7 and he died a miserable death.
My son participates in one of the most-policed sports drug wise. I am very glad for this. I would not encourage legalization of steroids for adults. Who will pay the medical bills for the steroid users when they have the terrible inevitable side effects? Even if they have health insurance, why should the rest of us pay for their heart surgeries, Viagra, and pain management when the consequences of steroid use are realized?
