Your system is out of balance...lacking something.
Good luck getting an MD to tell you anything nutritionally needed.
Get alkaline first. Then take a bunch of great vitamins and minerals daily...
make sure you are taking L-lysine.
You'll be fine.
Start from the inside out, not outside in.
Miss Hepburn, I'm rather dull on nutritional basis of healing. Best I've been able to do without study is to move the bulk of my diet to veg-based, white meat and fish only. Can you please share what you mean by "get alkaline"? With my little reading (not study, just reading) I had been given to understand that increasing acidity in blood provides anti-microbial benefits. I don't even know if that covers anti-viral: I changed my diet cold turkey after I read about the 1920s pneumonia pandemic. Please don't laugh, lol!
I am happy to study up on it if you would be kind enough to provide references! I just don't know where to begin - there is so much conflicting information published, when I would like to know the underlying mechanisms.
Thank you all so much for your advice! I'm going to take all of it to heart and try and implement the suggestions--especially taking vitamins, changing my diet, and watching my toothpaste usage.
I have noticed that I usually get these Cankers around 1 week before my period...
usually it's at least 2 at a time. At this time tonight, it's grown to four... I think a fifth is growing. it's AWFUL. My bottom inner lip is exploding with cankers. I've been using Kanka to numb the pain. I also have used salt for temporary relief.
I use Tom's toothpaste from sprouts... which is pretty good, right? I did used to use whitening toothpaste, which isn't the "healthiest"
Diet-wise... I eat PRETTY well. I do eat Tomatoes a lot and I do drink quite a bit of coffee/ ice chai-type drinks. Other than that, I eat sandwiches, salads, bagels... that's about it. I try and eat organic.
I'm going to try cutting those coffee-type drinks out of my diet and seeing what happens.
I also don't take ANY vitamins for now. Which vitamins would you all recommend? I hear it's usually a deficiency in B-12. Would taking a mult-vitamine be a good idea? I'm going to try and go to the store with your suggestions and get some vitamins tomorrow! I can't handle these bouts anymore!!!! I can't even eat without searing pain...
I'm generally a VERY healthy person. I really have nothing else wrong with me besides these reoccurring sores.
I'm 22 years old.
There was a period in my life when I had recurring UTI's (ew I know... lol) but after taking a bout of strong medicine (recommended by a urologist) it stopped completely and I haven't had one in over a year. Other than that, I literally have no health issues... besides these explosions of sores!!! I know it's lucky and it could be worse, but I can't even eat. :/
Honestly, what you're describing is a bit alarming. I've gotten canker sores from time to time, but usually because I poked my gum with the toothbrush or something.
I really think you should visit your general practitioner to address this in an organized way. It could be a food intolerance/allergy. It could be a vitamin deficiency. It could be something else. I would call your general practitioner and ask them to set up something so that you can come in at the start of or in the middle of your next big outbreak. The idea would be for the doctor to see the sores at their worst. That's going to give the doctor the most information.
Also, try keeping a food diary. You may be able to pinpoint what foods are triggering your reaction if it is a sensitivity issue.
But I would definitely seek medical attention. Your general practitioner may be able to treat it himself, or he may direct you to a specialist.
If you do a search for "canker sores menstrual cycle" you'll see that lots of women have the exact same issue. Most of them say they haven't found any way to prevent it, unfortunately. It can be hereditary, so ask your mom and sisters if they have the same problem and if they've found anything that helps.
Try taking l-lysine and a multivitamin.
Also, try gargling with a mix of equal parts of hydrogen peroxide and water. It will foam up and make your mouth feel full and it doesn't taste that great, more of an absence of flavor than any bad flavor, but it will help. After that, dab some milk of magnesia on the canker sores. You can repeat it several times a day. It helps a lot.

^This, especially b/c you seem to have already made that association, OP.
Many people get them because of stress as well.
Unfortunately, it can be so many things (just look at the list online) that you'll have to track a lot of stuff to see what sets them off.
I used to get them all of the time, especially when I was younger. It's quelled now, for the most part.
I used to get them ALL them time until I made the link to certain foods in my diet. I've learned that some acidic foods trigger mouth ulcers/canker sores. I can't eat Pineapple under ANY circumstances. Even one piece will cause a me to have painful canker sores. More recently I found out that I have to be careful with grapefruit and grapefruit juice. I can have a grapefruit maybe once or twice per month with no problems. Anything more than that I get painful mouth ulcers.
I don't seem to have problem with Oranges or other acidic fruits. At least none so far.
Lots of good suggestions above. When I first read the OP, my first thought was also stress/anxiety . I occasionally get sores in my mouth, usually directly on my gums. They come few and far between though, so I know it has nothing to do with a consistent nutritional deficiency or my cycle.
Also, those UTI's the OP described in a subsequent post are very often bladder spasms (as opposed to actual infections), and are often the root cause of the uncomfortable symptoms of a UTI. They, too, have a very strong link to stress.
OP, hope you get to the bottom of it and feel better soon.
Yes, that's what I use, but that's an awfully high price. Walmart has it for around $5.
SLS is a foaming agent, so you'll notice the SLS-free toothpaste doesn't foam up as much, but it's the price to pay for fewer canker sores.
