I have a question about poison oak. I was rummaging through a wooded forest area behind my girlfriends grandparents house the other day for Easter and her grandpa wanted to show us an old cemetery a few hundred feet from his house. All I could really think about was the risk of running into some sort of poison oak since it's not an area that people go through a lot. I saw some on the ground and the plant was sort of a red/green color but tried to avoid contact with it. I may just be overreacting, but if I did happen to get any of this oil on my clothing, I don't want to touch it and get a nasty rash.
I was wearing both dark dress slacks and a dark blue shirt and some vans shoes. How would I go about washing these?
I'm sure that I am fine, but I just want to be sure.
I really appreciate any advice in advance, thanks!

We have poison ivy here but it's my understanding that poison oak, ivy, and sumac contain essentially the same toxin known as urushiol. The poison oak version contains two extra carbon atoms or some such in the molecule but it's basically the same thing and causes the same allergic dermatitis in vulnerable individuals.
Anyway, I always threw my clothes in the washer and everything was OK. Sneakers too. I'm not familiar with van's shoes but if they can be put in the washer, do it.
Just wash the clothes in your regular way. Wash your hands and arms with soap and water after handling those clothes, just in case the oil from the plants IS on the clothes. Generally, if you wash the oil off of you, you'll be fine. If the shoes are washable, wash them, too, and air dry. If not, just wipe them down, and for the next couple days, wash your hands after handling your shoes.
