Probably needs to be checked by foot dr. I have a friend who goes every 6 weeks or so as she has this issue and he has to cut it. Maybe someone has other ideas.
Just thinking about this issue, do a search to see if there is anything else YOU can do to prevent going for invasive work. I would check.

You can soak your foot for a while in warm water and then gently scrub with a brush to remove any dead skin around the area. Then see if you can trim your toenail yourself. If there's a cut where the nail grew into the skin, wash it with soap and water and then put antibiotic ointment (like Neosporin) on it. Keep your toenail trimmed short enough that it doesn't grow into the toe anymore.
If that doesn't work, see a foot doctor. My kids have had that problem before and we were able to treat it at home.
Is it your toenail or your cuticle? If it is on the edge of the nail, it might be the cuticle. Yes, that can grow into your skin and be very painful. I bought a commercial (Sally Hanson) Cuticle Remover. Works but you need to not cut your toenails too short or the cuticle could grow longer and faster than the nail and into your skin.

That's not the cuticle. Cuticle is at the base of the nail not the edge and it doesn't become ingrown like a nail plate
What do I do if the toenail grows into skin? It provides for pain and inflammation...
You can definitely treat an ingrown toenail on your own, but I would highly recommend seeing a doctor to be sure and to have them tell you how to cut your toenails correctly and how to keep the problem at bay.
They can get bad, I've had both big toes "fixed"...but if someone had told me how to do it all the right way, I could have avoided all that mess.
It's called an ingrown toenail and as others have said, you can try treating it at home first or you can go see a Podiatrist. I've done both. If it was minor, I was able to cut the toenail away from the skin after soaking in warm water. I did have one that was very painful and opted for the podiatrist to treat it surgically.
I had to have 6 toes treated b/c my toenails were growing into the skin on the sides. My nails are more than semicircles. Treatment was very effective.
I just always go and have the podiatrist cut them. Ingrown toenails. Have them all the time
I have arthritis so it's kinda hard for me to bend over for any length of time to try and fix them myself.
