Thank you everyone! I feel a little better about the procedure now. I'd prefer not to be asleep for the procedure and rather have my tongue numbed. The nose part is scaring me however

The ENT told me they go through the nose because it significantly reduces, and all but negates, the gag reflex in most people. Passing the scope over the tongue via the mouth is actually much more uncomfortable.

You don't really feel anything on your tongue or mouth when the scope enters from your nostrils. I know this sounds counterintuitive, but it almost feels like a perfectly natural sensation of sniffing something up your nose and it going down your throat. Now, I wouldn't have it done for fun, but really, it's not bad. You'll do fine.

Tex is not lying to you. Whatever that spray they have you sniff is, it works really well and you don't feel the thing. It sounds undignified and uncomfortable, but the idea is worse than the experience. You're the kind of person I meant when I said tell them not to let you look. Bring a blindfold. You can look after and see it if you want and you'll see - well, everything: how it looks, that the spray really numbs, and that we told you it was easier than it sounds.

To piggyback on the above, OP, think of it like this.... The scope is not a procedure...it's just another part of the physical exam the ENT is doing. From the physician's perspective, the flexible scope is just a piece of equipment they use. So common, that a new clean scope was sitting in every exam room each time I went to the ENT's office this summer (twice for me and once for my 10 yo). They don't scope every patient, but they scope a lot.

If she didn't have anesthesia (and you don't HAVE to) then it wouldn't be a problem. I've never heard of them allowing you to drive yourself if you HAVE had anesthesia for a colonoscopy - it's a liability issue for them so they are pretty strict about even letting you get into a cab.

They look around, pull it out, and you go on your merry way and I didn't feel anything after. If you look at it, you'll have flashbacks to the movie Alien, so seriously, if you're nervous, don't look until after.

The other one, they drug you and use a different scope and I think it's so they can look further down. I assume it's not comfortable awake and that's the reason because all they're doing is looking just the same as above. Since you're out, I guess that one doesn't hurt, either.
Thank you, all of you, for being so informative and helpful! I saw my doc yesterday, and she's never heard of this other procedure, that doesn't require sedation. Could you explain what it's for? Does it only "scope" the upper half of the tract, so if you want the full scope, you need the endoscopy?

I assume sedation is necessary for the endoscopy, not just because it's uncomfortable, but it may trigger a gag reflex, without sedation? I think I asked, when I inquired last year sometime, and they said there's no option to go without the sedation.

She probably declined the anesthesia. It's ok to drive if you get the procedure without any sedation. I've done that, myself.

The non-anesthesia one has a little camera at the end to look at what's down there and the anesthesia one lets them look at it up close and personal, not on a screen. There are a variety of instruments for either, depending on what they want to see or what they're looking for. They wouldn't sedate you if they didn't have to because of additional cost and liability. So if they tell you you have to be sedated, I'd frankly rather not have to endure anything uncomfortable or scary myself (but I am a total weenie about medical stuff).

It sounds like we are talking about 2 different procedures, performed by 2 different specialists. What I (and I think NYC) are talking about is a laryngoscopy, an ENT procedure designed to look only at the nose and throat (only up to the vocal chords). An endoscopy, of course, is a GI procedure to view the esophagus.

So, two different things, but there is some possible overlap depending on why these procedures are being done. Acid reflux disease is a GI condition, and moderate and severe cases are treated by a gastroenterologist. However, acid reflux often causes throat discomfort, pain and hoarseness, which sends people to initially see an ENT. When an ENT does a scope, sees redness and inflammation (but no mass or polyps etc), he/she knows reflux could be the likely culprit, and they can prescribe medication to try in the short term to allow the throat to heal. If that doesn't work, however, an ENT will refer you to a gastroenterologist for additional testing (possibly an endoscopy) and treatment.

Sorry for rambling a bit. Hope that makes sense.
