I did read about it and there has to be more to the story. An open wound, compromised immune system, something. How many people get licked by their dog and don't get sick?
There definitely has to be more going on, and either more details should have been given, or if details are yet unknown, the story should not be plastered all over the news. 99.99% of people will not get sepsis if a dog licks them. I'm sorry for this man, but the way people (especially parents) are these days, they will hear a fear-mongering story like this, panic, and turn their dogs into shelters en masse.

^^^^ This. There has to be a contributing factor. People get licked by dogs all the time and are fine.
I work to keep my own hands away from my face and mouth and yet have an animal lick me, not this lady. Think about where those animal mouths have been. Nope.
That's what I was going to say. I've seen people let their dogs lick a baby's face And I wonder if they don't know how a dog cleans himself. Yikes!
There has to be an open wound or a dog bite for it to get to the bloodstream. Licking on it's own, even though it's not sanitary should not cause any problems. After all we are surrounded by germs in the air, on our food and on common surfaces. Yes, it's still common sense to keep your baby clean and away from unnecessary germs.
A representative for the New York Animal Hospital told The Independentthat it’s "extremely rare" for humans to become ill after contact with Capnocytophaga canimorsus, which was found in Mr Manteufel’s blood. In rare instances, the bacteria — which can be found in dog and cat saliva — may cause infections when it comes in contact with an open wound or burn, while the majority of Capnocytophaga canimorsus-related illnesses occur through dog bites. In fact, there have only reportedly been 500 cases of sepsis caused by Capnocytophaga canimorsus without a dog bite being found in the US and Canada since 1976.
As for babies/kids, lots of studies prove they are much better off being exposed to pets at an early age because the exposure prevents them from suffering from allergies later in life.
