I broke my tibia and fibula on my right leg six weeks ago.

I had surgery the next day (titanium rod in my tibia and plate on my fibula).

I was given an airboot two weeks ago. Yesterday, my OS says I can start walking again. She says I can put full weight on my leg. OS says my goal should be to be off my crutches in the next 10 days.

Questions?

1. How should it feel? Everytime I step...I have aches/pains. Intersetingly the pain is on the sole of my foot or heel...not ankle or shin pain.
2. Any suggestions as to what I can do to feel more comfortable?
3. Would appeciate any one else's experiences

Abraham

I had a a tibial osteotomy in May and was on crutches for about two months. When I started walking again It felt really weird - almost like I had jello leg and I definitely didn’t trust it fully. I went to the pool and walked in the water - where it was between waist and chest deep - to retrain my leg at the suggestion of my PT and ortho. That really helped I think but so does time. Ease into it. I started just walking at home, then walking at home and from my desk to the bathroom and back at work, etc.

I’m now walking 4-6 miles when my pain allows (and the pain is not from the fracture - but from nerve damage that I developed as a result of surgery). It will get better just allow yourself the grace to ease into it. Hang in there, it will get better!!

How long before you were able to walk period without the assistance of a crutch.

How long before your osteotomy healed on X-ray?
