In some other news than about Coronavirus, scientists discovers 90 million year old rainforest under antarctic ice seafloor. Which proved the theory that the continent Antarctica was once not where it is currently. That it drifted near the south pole or the earth axis had changed position causing it to freeze over.
Which supported the finding of this ancient map of Antartica that showed fertile forest and animals.
This is a puzzlement.
My first reaction is that the map must be of some other land mass, and just happen to fit what we know about Antarctic. I am not prepared to believe that Antarctica drifted that far that fast.
Antarctica, as far as I know, has been covered in ice for many millions of years. Man walked out of Africa (as far as I know) about 80,000 years ago.
The map clearly shows what looks like Antarctica's position near the tip of South America without any ice. This piece of news confirms that the land used to have forestation and life.
Look a little closer and don't add imaginary details.
Just above the midpoint of the map, on the right, is obviously west Africa with the Azores. The left side shows the eastern cost of N & S America. At the bottom is a coast and a ship approaching the Straights of Magellan. There are no details on the land below that coast (obviously supposed to be Antarctica). So how do you interpret that as "warm & forested?"
The proportions & distances on these old maps are way off because the cartographers use data collected from the ships measured by making estimates based on how fast they pass floats dropped from the ships as they sail by-- but the ships & floats are not only moving thru the water, but also with (or against) the currents....It's like being on one of those moving sidewalks at the airport. If you yourself walk while you're on it, you look down and see yourself move 6 ft, but to an observer not on the walkway, you've moved 10 ft, or only 2 ft if you're going against "the current."
In regards fossils indicating forests on Antarctica-- explained by continental drift +/- the periodic changes of climate from "Snowball Earth" to "Hothouse Earth." Most of Earth's history includes no permanent ice at the poles. The Earth has been cooling off continuously since its formation 4.5B y/a as a ball of molten lava. Energy always moves from warmer to cooler, and "space" is essentially the ultimate heat sink. We will continue to cool, although not necessarily in a linear trajectory.
