That drug was prescribed to my dog for anxiety and to a person I know with substance use issues as an anti-anxiety med during withdrawals. It doesn't sound like your use is exactly appropriate, but I'm not a doc (obviously).
It is very commonly prescribed for nerve pain. It's really the "go-to" drug for nerve pain.
I tried Gabapentin a few times for my peripheral neuropathy and I just cannot take it. It makes me so dizzy that it is hard to stand up. The side effects are supposed to lessen with time, but after a week I gave it up.
Neuropathy is hard to correct. If mine is not under control with meds I am in a lot of pain. I am now on 3 different drugs for it and it is under control. Good luck with finding something that works. I would also recommend a neurologist if you do not already have one. They will really work with you to get your pain under control.
Gabapentin has seemingly indirectly helped me manage severe back pain due to injuries, but it was prescribed to help me sleep due to post-concussive induced anxiety. I've been on it for about three months and I have been noticeably more agile of late. It helps me rest but does not make me noticeably more drowsy. I have not experienced nausea.
My doc gave me gabapentin instead of naproxyn for my back pain. I had been taking naproxyn for probably 20 years without problem but he said I shouldn't be taking it. After about a month my mind was in a continuous fog. I couldn't think clearly and had problems remembering things. I thought I was getting a rapid onset case of Alzheimer's! And I really wasn't seeing any pain improvement. I decided to drop the gabapentin and go back to naproxyn. Within a couple of weeks my mind cleared up and after about a month I was feeling my old self again. Never again.
A couple of years later I was talking with a friend and she mentioned gabapentin and said her son, who is a highly rated doctor, said no one should be taking gabapentin as it causes more problems in the body than it fixes.

Please be careful when taking Naproxen(also known as Aleve) on a long term basis. It belongs to a class of drugs known as NSAIDS; Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. They also include Ibuprofen (Motrin and Advil) and Aspirin. They can harm the kidneys and cause you to have Chronic Kidney Disease.
I took Motrin (ibuprofen) for years and ended up with Stage 3 Chronic Kidney Disease diagnosed a few years ago. Recently, it has progressed to Stage 4. It won’t take long now before it goes to Stage 5 when I will need dialysis. I am only 60 years old. All because I took Motrin on a chronic basis. Maybe that’s why your doctor didn’t want you on it anymore. I just don’t want anyone else to end up like me. Be careful. Keep an eye on your kidney blood test results.
Ive tried Gaba a few times in the past, but I never really felt it helped at all, but from what Ive heard from other people, you have to take fairly large doses for it really be effective.
As far as meds for addiction, Suboxone is king imo! it saved my life and I still take it 10 yrs later, and will probably take it for the rest of my life, but thats fine, its a maintenance drug, it keeps me clean and functioning, in fact, I think they need to be handing it out on street corners for free!!
There's no predictable reaction to any drug, and we all react differently.
I had tingling in my arm for 2 years, had an MRI, my Ortho was to refer me to a neck specialist, but I declined the invite, as I suspected neck surgery.
I lived with it until I moved to Tucson, then went to a walk-in clinic in Nogales, MX, one afternoon, told the Dr. of the tingling and within 5 minutes I was out of there with a prescrip. for Gabapentin. I was braced for having to take this drug for the rest of my life, but M-i-r-a-c-u-l-o-u-s-l-y, I took one pill and it went away, just like that! U-n-b-e-l-e-v-a-b-l-e!!!
I've only taken it once since, when I over did it, remodeling my mobile home. Absolutely amazing drug.
And, I know others, as to be expected, who gained little or nothing from it.
I'm also glad that I'm now in AZ. The one Ortho I saw here told me the Ortho's in AZ are called "Cowboy Ortho's", less dependent on imaging or over-imaging which was what I endured in Las Vegas.

Does it do anything for pain or is it just for addiction?
I did about ten years ago. I was mis-diagnosed with trigeminal neuralgia (I had a sinus infection), and was prescribed Gabapentin. It did not help at all with the pain, and I had some pretty terrible emotional side effects which included paranoia and suicidal thoughts (I always read on side effects on site). I hope you have good luck with it, but be aware of the side effects.

It does alleviate some pain, but its not really strong enough (imo) to be used for that purpose, it doesnt fully bond with the receptors, like most painkillers do.
Its basically a safe, legal, alternative to drugs of abuse, One doctor I saw described it like this..."Heroin is like a steak dinner for an addict...Suboxone is beenie weenie" LOL (basically meaning, it will 'satisfy' the addiction, but its not going to produce the euphoria that Heroin does), it keeps addicts in a constant state of 'feeling normal'.
The fact that Suboxone is VERY tightly regulated, I think, is proof positive that our lawmakers have no intention of cleaning up the drug problem in this country! Its a 'controlled substance' for petes sake! (something very odd going on, when a drug to keep people OFF a much deadlier drug...is so tightly regulated!), It doesnt produce any kind of 'high' at all, you cannot 'get high' from Suboxone.
In regards to Gaba, that is now starting to become a 'controlled substance' too!! (Its almost like they want addicts to use the more dangerous illegal drugs?)
