when I went for my colonoscopy/ upper endoscopy,I used a service where they sent a lady to come get me and wait in waiting room until I am released, the outfit makes her believe that all these out patients would want to eat like a horse and she will get this as an extra benefit ,eat along.
Unfortunately,I just want to go home as it is tiring and she wants to eat eggrolls,so she dropped me off and went looking for eggrolls.herself.
why cant OP drive himself and then check into a local hotel overnight ,then drive himself back?
How would he get to the hotel would be the question?
Patients stay in Hotels as some come for eye surgery from far away, other states and even countries…
The bottom line is with a little deceit you can fool us but we are not knowingly letting you operate a motor vehicle to drive away and will call the police if you disregard this…
Our patients are escorted to patient pickup in a wheelchair and buckled into a passenger seat.
Years ago we had an issue when there was an accident on the way home and the patient was injured and claimed the nurse should not have let her leave without seatbelt fastened…
It’s similar to taking a newborn home in an approved car seat…

The surgery centers around here I am familiar with also have the designated driver drive the vehicle to the patient pickup area, and the patient is accompanied out to the vehicle by a staff member ( wheelchair or not) and helped into the vehicle.
I'd hope that if that patient or anyone else involved in that accident tried to take legal action against your surgery center, your written policies and documented efforts to carry them out ( ie, ensuring patients got safely into the passenger side, or back seats, buckled up) would have resulted in the case being thrown out of court.
We did have a retired Marine that literally walked out the door saying he was going home and driving himself…
Of course we could not stop his leaving against medical advice but did report to law enforcement a person impaired from anesthesia is getting into his car to drive home…
Officer responded and patient waiting for neighbor to arrive.
If he had gotten into an uber there was nothing the officer could do about it.

Very True and the chart would have been noted Against Medical Advice.
A little deceit and craftiness can overcome many safeguards.
As mention when the ride was unable to pickup due to unforseen event the Surgeon actually took the patient home and it has happened where the charge nurse once it twice brought a patient home...
If the patient isn't medically ready for discharge in 23hours and 59 minutes a hospital transfer would be procedure...

Not everyone wants to be safeguarded against their will all the time. If I felt like I could manage on my own, I wouldn't want to bear the added expense and inconvenience to satisfy your liability concerns. Note anything you want on the charts but you'd have to tase me and handcuff me to get me in a $2000 ambulance and shipped to a $6000/nt hospital if I felt like I would be fine in my own home. Unless you're buyin'...
It would be helpful at times to have a patient stay longer but Out Patient Surgery Licensing unfortunately does not permit this.
Ambulance transport under contract is currently $384 here but I would not know charges anywhere else.
It happens maybe 3 or 4 times a year for medical necessity.
Way back when I started we provided complimentary door to door service and it was much appreciated and did so for many years... basic medical transport in a van type with wheelchair lift.

You can't cancel procedures after they are finished. I doubt you cancel procedures after they are started. So the smart person planning to walk out and take an uber would not reveal that beforehand.
That's not a bad price for transport but that leaves the hospital stay. I guess non-emergency transport is much less. Twenty years ago my wife was in a car accident and taken by ambulance to hospital "as a precaution" and we were billed $1200. It's so easy to "spare no expense" when it's not your expense.
As I understand it, if you leave AMA (against medical advice), Medicare can refuse to pay your bill. If that's the case, they truly have us by the short and curlies! I, too, have no one to drive me; therefore, I simply elect not to do anything elective and pray I never have to do anything unelective.
Those following have a better understanding now and the choice is theirs.
Cancelations are most common when the patient forgot and had a meal before arriving… again, we only know what you tell us.
One of our seasoned RN will ask on the way to
Pre-Op tell me what you had for breakfast this morning and 98% of the time the answer is I was told I couldn’t have breakfast… the rest will say coffee, eggs, toast, juice, etc.
Similar when Admit asks the patient for the name, relationship and phone number for the person taking you home… and is this person also your emergency contact?
Some will say no one, others will not have contact info and in both cases everything stops…
